Okay, I thought I had completed a guide for 1950 Japan, but I was wrong. So now, after playing Japan 1950 in my current and 2nd run of WC4, I have become interested in this strategic US ally. I shall detail how Japan from the depths of defeat to become a superpower.
Part 1: The Defence Perimeter
- As the screenshot shows, you will have to enter the Korean War to help South Korea against the combined might of North Korea, PRC and USSR.
As you know, without help, Seoul is bound to fall very quickly. Even with whatever aid you can send to the Peninsula, Seoul is already doomed. Considering this, it is more strategic to capture Seoul when its fall is guaranteed or swiftly recapture it if it falls. Then, deploy heavy tanks and build up forts to seal off the entire land route and defend against attacks from all directions (land and sea).
- As you know, USA and Canada are likely to deploy a fleet to attack via Kamchakta. Fend off the attacking Soviet Pacific fleet and sail some troops to join the offensive.
The most important element in your attack force is the pre-spawned heavy tank. This will provide the firepower for a successful landing.
- Additionally, it's time to reclaim the seas for Japan once more. Send all 3 naval gens on the offensive, occupying enemy ports and sinking troop carriers.
Do remember to deploy subs occasionally to strengthen your firepower. This helps when fighting the PRC navy.
The outcome should be control of the seas, the successful defence of ROC from an amphibious landing by PRC troops and the failure of WTO forces during attempts to land behind the Seoul frontlines.
- Lastly, you will have to mount a homeland defence. Ensure that empty cities have troops to garrison them so that if the enemy ever uses paratroopers, they will fail. Also, Okamura makes for a useful air commander who should operate from Tokyo while Hata can be deployed against Kuznetsov and Bagramyan.

Part 2: Counterattack on 3 Fronts
- Kamchakta Front. From your foothold in this tiny piece of Soviet land, expand westward and blitz through the relatively unguarded Siberia. If they had survived, the Americans and Canadians will continue to assist you.
- Korean Front. Step up your heavy tank production and take a more aggressive stance, it's time to unify the Korean Peninsula! After taking Pyongyang, cross the Yalu River and attack PRC via Manchuria.
- Central Plains Front. Land in Shanghai, just like you would in 1939, and conquer the Central Plains. From here, expand southward to Hong Kong and use it to enter Southeast Asia.
- Homeland reserves and the Kamchakta Expeditionary Fleet. Move your troops either towards Southeast Asia, Vladivostok or against the Central Plains. For me, I sent Hata to Vladivostok to assist in the Siberian Campaign and eventually against Moscow while Okamura travelled to the Middle East via the Central Plains. Kondo's fleet will sail southward and join Ozawa and Toyoda in Southeast Asia.

Part 3: Power Projection
- Your Siberian Campaign will eventually lead you to the gates of Moscow. Send your weaker troops to attack the rest of Europe via Minsk while you build up your forces around Hata. Lay siege to Moscow and seize the Soviet capital!
Through Belarus, attack Poland and the other cities, weakened by earlier NATO attacks.
- Your Manchurian Campaign will lead you to attack across Northern China, Mongolia and eventually Central Asia. Smash through the region and split your troops into 2 groups. Your targets are Kiev and Stalingrad!
From here, advance into the Balkans from the north and Poland from Krakow.
- The troops in Southeast Asia will swing northward to join the Central Plains forces and attack Iran via Tibet and Central Asia. The end goal is the Levant!
The Levant will provide a good staging ground against Greece and Istanbul as well as Egypt. Do secure Suez Canal as soon as your navy arrives.
Leave some troops to defend against Iran and amass a large and powerful force here. When your navy escort has completely assembled and you've a large force with some RA and heavy tanks to boost it, sail towards Somalia, it's time to enter North Africa!
Conquering Somalia in one fell swoop is the key to this. Land a large portion of your troops on the Horn of Africa, then position your cruisers to attack the city before entering it. From here, attack Northward.

In my game, funding Brazil help the Brazilians in their entry into North Africa. They eventually reclaimed all lost land in the Northwest region of Africa.
Funding France then Spain helped to delay the enemy as our allies were able to put up slightly more resistance.
Once your economy is stable enough, alternate the production of atomic bombs in Changchun and Shenyang. Khabarovsk can be used to manufacture hydrogen bombs. These will come in handy when you attempt to capture key targets in 1 turn (for example, Tehran or Baghdad are empty. Dropping nukes help to lead to their immediate capture).
