As a beginner, you may prefer to side with Carthage in the Punic Wars, but after a couple of conquests (I'm gonna have to redo them because of my foolish mistake to reset the game), I find that the Roman side is also quite simple, as long as you have a smooth early game, and do diplomacy.
General Tips:
Bribe the Aetolian League, Lusitani, Mauretania, Cessetani, Allobroges in this order preferrably, unless you are playing as one of them of course. Aetolian League and Lusitani usually get taken out fast, so letting them join early makes their troops closer to enemy cities, and they are more likely going to capture Macedonia or Turdetani.
Declare war on Syracuse right away, this is basically Sardinia in EW6. A lot of times Syracuse will survive if nothing is done against them, they might even invade Italy, which is a pain in the back.
Unless you are going for a ridiculous score or have great skill like no other, put generals on your starting units and go straight towards your closest or weakest enemy. You will have an advantage taking out your rival.
Specific tips:
Masaesyli:
Quite easy in my opinion. Destroy Massylii and go for Capsa and Carthage. Help Cyrene with Lepcis, and help Mauretania in Western Africa. Destroy Syracuse if they are still alive. Then split your army, one to Iberia and one to Greece.
Lusitani:
Have not tried them yet, but I soon will. There is another separate thread on this forum about this conquest. Basically rush Turdetani with everything and you're all set.
Aetolian League:
Rush Macedonia, take them out, then try to take the Odrysians and Illyrians out as fast as possible. Send a small expedition force to Africa and steal cities, then march on the West to destroy Turdetani.
Cyrene Kingdom:
They tend to do well without you playing as them, so this conquest actually isn't that easy. Make sure you penetrate Carthage, while splitting half of your armies into Greece, hopefully keeping the Aetolian League alive. Along with Rome, clear out the Eastern Front, and focus on Carthage and Turdetani. Very winnable conquest, but a little time consuming.
Allobroges & Massalia:
Split your armies in two. One goes for Turdetani and the other goes to the East. Pray that Rome kills Syracuse and holds the Carthaginians. Also could be time consuming if luck is not on your side. Preferably choose Allobroges since they start out with one extra city.
Cessetani:
Rush Turdetani and save Lusitani. Don't worry too much about Hannibal and Hasdrubal. They both die eventually. Kill Carthage then Rome and Cyrene will do the work in the East.
Rome:
Kill off Syracuse, kill off Illyrians, and try to hold the Carthaginian invasion. Scipio should do the work in the West. Pretty simple.
Luck is a big factor in conquests. Sometimes Rome struggles to do anything, and sometimes Lusitani dies in turn 6. When something that tragic happens early game, I just restart and hope for a better beginning.
Since I reset my game, time to do these all again using all my generals because I could care less now.
