Stonewall Jackson with only prince max rank and minus tactics master. Powerful but not necessary. If you have leftover slots and medals, you can get this guy.

So lets have a run down of the good french generals for history mode (no iaps as they are not allowed).
1. MacMahon: no complaints, a beast
2. Joffre: kind of starts off bad, especially when compared to his counterparts. But still has strong potential.
3. Guepratte: a good admiral, but will not be great on land. Still pierce will be pretty nice. A good howitzer or cav gen for history mode.
4. Esperey: pretty bad skills. Once 5 textbooks are invested, he will serve the role as the Ambrose Burnside of this team.
And we have to do the battle of verdun with this arsenal?

When one can only rely on the first two generals, we can only hope that the provided generals have sufficient merits, and that Verdun will hopefully be manageable like Prussia (the odds are questionable though, considering the historical context)

To be fair the generals for civil war are also trash ( grant, burnside, Sheridan etc) but with verdun i will have the luxury of getting Macmahon or Joffre, “but you could get McClellan for civil war”. Yes but I could keep Macmahon ( good inf gen) or Joffre ( great cav gen), I wouldn’t be able to keep McClellan

I can't really afford to drop him entirely right now. He's serving as my #4 or so cavalry general until my other guys like Joffre comes into their own.

I really don't get the hype around Nikolaevich. Mountain is still lousy on cavalry and desert and station sucks. And his TA is a low 93 at emperor. Sure he costs 20k coins, but that's what you pay for his crappy start. If you want to get him anywhere you'd have to invest atleast 15 or so textbooks and some silver medals and more coins. Not cheap. I will get Jackson, Johnston, plumer and joffre as my 4 best cav gens but who then? Stépanovic? He is really expensive so till I have enough medals for that I will use Nikolaevich and if I decide that stépanovic is too expensive I will keep him
