I bought Bodyazhiev, Ivanov, McClellan and Hidenburg, while the rest are free gens. If I help the French, I get dragged down by a defense of my side of the Straits against an Ottoman naval blockade. If I attack on the southern side, my troops are killed easily because the Ottoman admiral slips through the Turn 1 blockade easily while the narrow region proves to be hard to attack.

It is quite a difficult mission if you don't have Beatty. Your land troops are of secondary importance in this mission. You definitely need a good admiral to defeat Ottoman navy and to occupy ports to prevent spamming. Otherwise ships will blockade the channel.

You definitely need Beatty to beat this. My tactic was to send my units up North to help the French out and sent Beatty to take out the Fortresses and the enemy Admiral. Land and take the first city and then push eastward. After taking that city, retreat west and land on the last Ottoman City, and now once again push eastward. Beatty should've managed to take out the enemy navy and forts and if not, the French should've cleaned up after you. Spam units at the German city and you've hopefully won.

ahaha I just ploughed through the south, but of course with beatty securing the "English Channel". France had no trouble owing to the defeated Ottomans, and the Germans have no reinforcements to aid them.

I presume you are speaking of campaign, because in a challenge Germans are usually more active.

I did the challenge mode on first try, first I took the southern city and destroyed the enemy navy, then I spam light machine gunners and with them and an infantry gen attacked the northern city. Then, with the Navy, I bombarded both remaining cities and the rest of the units attacked the last city

Beatty is your only option. Bacon can be good, but you need to replace 2 of his skills. And he can only have 4.
