The only thing that seems to be gold exclusive is upgrading the abilities of generals.
All other stuff can be done using gold which I think is also important.

I think grading your generals or buying tech stuff... I have not spend medals to upgrade generals since with woc3 i fcked it up right from the start  But i think grading generals is main use for medals |

From whatever I've seen till now is that this game is heaven for grinding, you have banks that give you medals, coins can also be farmed (though we need more info on how to farm them), components are bought in stores and they have good resale (at least 50 chips have resale of 650 medals, 13 each)
We need more info on how to farm these things

multiplayer also give you medals, but soon it will be dominated by the ones who have everything or just hacked...

Till now (lvl 50+) I only use medals for grading generals (see topic generals)
