This comes as a complementary to burningwings 's european-war-4.boards.net/thread/9418/conquest-summary.
Firstly, in this image I divided the whole 1798 battlefield into 6 (7 if you count Russia, but ussually if the French faction gets there it is just a steamroll.. not really a fight). Sorry for the ugly lines and weird UI elements (this picture was made from 4)
So, we have:
-Iberia and Battle of the Atlantic (green)
-Western European Front (bright red)
-Italian Front (yellow)
-Scandinavian Gambit (purple) credits to stoic for awesome name
-Central European Front (blue)!!!!! The most important
-The Eastern Front (dark red)
It should be noted that French Eagle has a +95% chance to win.
Now, I will try to dissect them and make an analysis:
1. Iberia and Battle of the Atlantic
French side: Spain, marginal French support if Portugal doesn't fall by turn 15. Some Turkish ships can also arrive.
Coalition: Portugal, BEF near Gibraltar and navy from mainland
Front description:
Overall this front is merely a distraction for the French side. Portugal will certainly fall sooner on later, especially if the Player declares war to Portugal right from the start (strongly recommanded if playing French Eagle country). If the player does nothing, Portugal may survive till turn 25, Belsford playing a big role in its survival. Also this (not declaring) weakens Spain, which will divert some forces to Central Europe. The Brits also have a low chance of taking Sevilla for several turns, and Portugese often get Coruña.
After Portugal is taken, the battle for the Atlantic begins. Spain will at first do poorly; they get a lot of troops in the ocean, with little to no escort (ussually the small Spanish Navy rushes ahead and gets destroyed) that get killed by the British navy. This first wave happens in turn 30-35. After this, the Brits may or may not resist; this solely depend on how they are doing in The North Sea and Lowlands. Ussually they get cornered by French and Danes and Ireland falls to Spanish rule by turn 45. After this, Britain is certainly doomed and surrenders by turn 60-65.
Recommanded countries to play: None
-Britain is hard. They have to keep Portugal alive, take Netherlands fast and also help a lot so that Prussia and HRE win in CE. Being a 3 star, you miss the spawning of many good generals. The only good part I find is Nelson's fleet near Sicily, which is massive help on the Italian Front. Perhaps it is worth a challenge considering it is part of the Coalition.
-Portugal is even harder. You are fighting a country 5 times as large with limited British support. However, south of France is ussually a defenseless area. If you are good (taking Spain in 25 turns) you can prevent the fall of your allies in CE and win those sweet Coalition Badges. An interesting choice, and I consider it the best of the 3 countries.
-Spain... well not so great. It is really far from Russia, the British Isles are still not easy to invade, and 3 star country rewards are bad.
2. Western European Front
French side: France, Netherlands, marginal and late support from Spain, Denmark and sometimes Italy (If Naples and HRE get destroyed quickly)
Coalition: Great Britain, HRE, Prussia (both only on land)
Front description:
This is one of the more static fronts, most likely due to the body of water. On land, HRE (Merverdt to be exact) does a charge at Netherlands. This, combined with some support from Blücher weakens the Dutch enough so that the British invasion (led by Paget on land and Hood on water ) is often succesful. However, the French take the Lowlands with ease if they are doing well in CE ( and they ussually do). Nowadays, Britain rarely takes any other city from the continent, but sometimes they can succesfully invade Scandinavia. By turn 30, the French side will most likely achieve naval supremacy over the isles and soon after the landings will begin.
Reccomended countries to play: Netherlands
Netherlands farming is infamous, there is enough said about it .
Regarding France, sure, just for the sake of it is nice to do it once. However playing a 3 star is always a bad thing... at least there are not so many fronts to manage.
3. Italian Front
French side: Italy, France, later Ottomans and sometimes Spain
Coalition: Sardinia, Naples, BEF, marginally HRE (Radetsky)
Front description:
It is a must for the player to declare war on Sardinia. If they do, they will fall in 3-6 turns. If they don't, French forces get killed in the sea by BEF, and Sardinia gets enough money to make itself a regional power and survive for 15 more turns. Regarding the mainland. Naples ussually takes Rome, but they get pushed back by France. After the Ottomans join, they are basically doomed and surrender by turn 25-30.
Recommended countries to play: Italy, Naples
Italy is a French one star. Nuff said
Naples is perhaps one of the better countries to play as Coalition. It is not that hard to conquer all of Italy, and after that they can fight everyone that's left. Not easy, but doable.
RIP Sardinia. The strenght of Sardinia comes from it joining late.. not the case here. Also I hardly believe you can do it without having Nelson in your possesion.
4. Scandinavian Gambit
French side: Denmark... sometimes limited Dutch and French support
Coalition: Sweden, Prussia, later Russia and Britain
Front description:
Since the update, no longer a gambit. Denmark is surely the most overpowered country. It always wins Scandinavia by turn 20 without a problem, it often invades and Prussia and it is the first country to attack Russia proper. Also a major player in the invasion of Britain
Reccomanded countries to play: None
Sweden is tough, and even if you win you won't be able to quickly help your allies in Central Europe.
Frankly it is hard to do as well as the Danish AI. However it is perhaps one of the better countries for speed records. (Alongside Poland and Ottomans)
5. Central European Front aka The One which decides everything
French side: France, Netherlands, Denmark, Poland later Italy, Ottomans and sometimes Spain
Coalition: HRE, Prussia, later Russia
Front description:
Singlehandedly the most relevant front on the whole map. The French and Danes storm into Germany, Poland sometimes survives, being a valuable distraction and asset against Russia, while Ottomans but the last nail in the coffin for HRE by turn 25-30. After that, Russia sometimes manages to get back half of that back, but with weak allies they are doomed to fall by turn 50-60.
Reccomended countries to play: Poland, Prussia
Poland is in the middle of the enemy. It is tough at first, but if you survive for 15 turns you have done a massive service for your alliance and you can then easily take HRE. Then Russia will be easy to destroy... the only downfall is that Britain will be quite far.
Prussia is good. Not only you can make sure that Poland and Denmark don't get too powerful, you can also help your southern friends to hold off the French invasion. Alongside Naples, one of the better Coalition countries
HRE... 1806's Austria is better than you. Still, while pretty hard, time is key. If you have good enough generals, you can push the French and conquer Netherlands quickly, and after that go for Italy and Ottomans. As in EW4, perhaps the best Coalition country for speedruns, however is is not nearly as simple as it was back then.
6. The Eastern Front
French side: Ottomans
Coalition: Russia, HRE, sometimes Naples
Front description:
This is the last front to join the war. It features the two giants which clash by the Black Sea. By the time they join, they will have a lot of resources in reserve, so the state of HRE is key. Ussually the Turks win this by turn 25 and then push to Kiev by turn 40, solely because the Russians get distracted by CE and Denmark.
Reccomended countries to play: None
Ottomans seem like a fine choice. They are not. Firstly because they are a 3 star, secondly because HRE is not that easy to take and thirdly and most importantly because they are so far from Britain.
Russia is not that bad, but is is not good either. They have a massive economy and a large enough army, but by the time it reaches the battle its allies will be already losing. Spain is far and not that easy to take. Also it is a Coalition 3 star, which is far from great.
If requested, I could show main strategy to use for each country ( arrows on the map)
