I think we should clear up our left flank completely before starting operations in the center. Actually we can capture the first town immediately We can try to take the town in the center, but that is optional indeed. In this case our allies will capture it. Well, let it be and we continue our attack on the left flank. After our left flank is clear we return back to the center where Austrians counterattack our allies. But now our appearance will turn the tide. Now it is time for the final attack. Let's take another town to make it a permanent base (we will hire some support units there). Austrians fight bravely but they have little chance of success against our elite units.

I can add that if we succeed to capture the city in the center, we can build a palace there for Louise and let Austrians bleed white before our final attack.

This guide is not working for me. On the 12th turn Austrian heavy cavalry is everywhere and all my troops dying in battle with them. I have Kutuzov, Bismarck, Ney, Mahmud II, Jourdan and Gates.

Jourdan and Gates are too weak for Roman Unification missions. Without generals with aura skills it will be very difficult to complete the last campaign... Mahmud is not enough. You need Massena, Karl and probably Murat. At least two of them...

Currently have Massena, Mahmud II, Davout and 4 free gens.
When I get close to Milan, Radetzky's dialogue causes the Austrians to regroup at Milan and spawn ~2 units per turn. Then, I have to cut through the hordes of enemies to try to win.
I have neither the strength to cut the Austrians down quickly nor the ability to attack the cities on the right to open a second front to bypass the Milan horde and attack the city directly.
This means that I must add more gens now, right?

If you seek my advice I can't give any... The reason is simple - I never completed this mission with only 3 generals

Mahmud will do less damage here due to the lack of rockets sadly... You have 2 red-shirt (one of the best special units for attack)and 1 heavy . Aura generals are the best at the end , because you only need a lot of generalized damage. You can get even Barclay instead of Karl if you don't have medals . I've recently found that rifles are less useful in battle than armors and health-suits , because are SKILLS that matter (easy tech should fix this . Rifles were more useful in EW4 ) .

I followed your method of building a Palace instead of the Military Institute I usually build in the central city. I deployed Louise there like you did. This helped me to wipe out most of the Austrians involved in Benedek's counterattack, reducing enemy strength when Radeztky rallied them to gather in front of Milan. Moreover, I only continued to play if I captured the city directly north of the starting position as well as send Messena to lead some inf units to attack the bottom right lvl 2 city once the Austrians left. The latter was the manoeuvre I tried to execute earlier but with proper attacking forces now. Also, I built a factory in the central province to spam light inf and cav every round to crush the enemy. Lastly, the above plus my cav upgrade to lvl 3 Atk for both heavy and light probably helped to contribute to my 2* clear.

I have Lan, Massena, Alexander, Mahmud, Murat and Dabrowski. Why is this being difficult?

I have Lan, Massena, Alexander, Mahmud, Murat and Dabrowski. Why is this being difficult? This mission is naturally more difficult in its own right and in terms of being the past campaign series. Try to invest in Karl so that you have at least 2 gens of each land unit type. After the central and NW city have fallen, most of your troops should bypass the enemy and head to Milan directly ASAP, if possible. The rest to distract the Austrian spam in the central city.

I actually did some studying that says that the AI has a greater population then the player. The Red shirts are greatly effective against the spam with the Fast reload abilty but are not really against city's. I used light Artillery spam along with a few red shirts to counter the Austrians.

I try, but Benedek runs away and my generals always stop in an unbeatable siege. I achieved a 3* clear for it just now (I left it at a 2* clear until just now). The plan is to use your facilities to build up your gold income, population limit and knowledge income. Spawn a heavy cav and deploy your 2nd best cav gen on it. March your initial forces northward, but keep the light arty gen and 2nd cav gen to defend your bases. Spam militia to guard your cities. The northern assault force will converge near the northern Imperial Fort then launch an attack. Start to spam light cav and militia. After you assisted in recapturing the central base or, at the very least, ward off the enemy, move the two to attack the northern fort. Quickly overrun the nearby enemy city. Use the spammed light cav to guard it. Use the Military Academy to spam Spy to disable the other Imperial Fort. The inf and arty gens are to attack Milan's stables. Cav gens to prioritise capturing the enemy factories and attack the centre east city, if possible. Keep spamming militia and light cav to overrun the enemy. Darth Vader's suggestion of spamming troops is on point. However, he is off about who or what to spam. He recommends spamming Redshirts (who wouldn't want to?), but they are locked so your next best option is a militia-light cav spam. I achieved a Population cap of 100, which is sufficient for this. Disclaimer: I have strong gens with very high HP and you can consider them to have lvl 5 skills for all skills.
