The French general here has 2 enemy units on a 180 degree arc to his position, this causes his morale loss.Morale down mean he will suffer penalties to both his attack and his defense.(Purple Eagle icon with 1 arrow down)
Note the HRE units do not have to attack, their presence alone automatically generates morale down on the French general.
A turn later the unwise general finds himself totally surrounded, this is a double arrows down eagle with a larger penalty .
Final pic is a composite the right side shows morale up on 2 HRE units (bonus to both offense and defense),and the left side shows triple morale down (Icon with the cloud and a question mark) what the game calls state of confusion. it's really sorta of a stun, the confused unit is totally disabled,it cannot attack or defend or even move.No retaliation is allowed under such conditions either, meaning you can attack a confused unit and it wont fight back at all:
Both Morale up and morale down conditions are often just temporary usually lasting just a few turns, they can also be caused by game events in the campaign mode like loosing or winning a strategic towns or general ect..
Morale up is usually caused either by game events or by killing enemy units (the unit that made the killing blow) so sometimes it make sense to save the killing shot for your best unit so it fights even better next few rounds.
Cavalry has the ability to randomly lower 1 state of morale (whatever moral level defender is,it can be reduced by 1 up till confusion reached) it's even possible for a cavalry unit to attack an enemy and kill it, increase its own morale and then attack another and lower the morale of that second enemy unit all in a single round.
The state of confusion last untill the cause of it is removed,so either getting more food or the cavalry debuff effect wears off.
