I play this game on two platforms, one of which I started on long after the other (Kindle, then Android), so I got to learn from all my mistakes.
On the Android version, which I started later, I took pains first to get two princesses and two generals, THEN to start the campaigns in earnest. This way you have the strongest possible generals to run early campaign battles with and complete them more easily. There is a bit of a chicken-and-the-egg thing here in that you first have to complete the Coalition campaigns as far as Chain the Beast for the Nobility grind. But between that and a medal-farming setup in Conquest mode, it's not hard to train up some generals and the first couple of princesses to really impressive levels and then carve through the early campaigns with ease.
The other thing I would advise is that if you can at all afford it, open up all the slots for maximum flexibility.
I found that it is possible, using the Holy Roman Empire princess chase (e.g. as defined by Antonio Luna), to get Sophia and Fatimah without items. However, I find that without War Horse and maybe Quality Saddle as well, it is difficult to get a cavalry general into Spain quickly enough to get the other princesses easily. I tried it with Dumouriez and he almost got nailed by the French generals on the way out; I needed to buy him a heal to get him through (but it got me Fatimah, so it was worth it).
