It was hard! I'll tell you why. First you have to stabilize(since the low resources) It's a juggling thing, trying to stay alive from the Spainish onslaught. And building up resources. Forget defying the Spainish Armada pray the Brits will help. Then if you do well, you make it to Madrid. Now you HAVE to split, one going NE and one going SE,hopefully you taken Seville by now,if not backtrack as this city needs under your control. Once approaching Barcelona and Zaragoza you find the Frenchman and Italians everywhere, all your allies are falling as you cannot send the help. Game over for Portuguese! I have all the IAPs and Sofia,Ney,Murat,Massena, and Gates and Falson.

IMO, just bypass Madrid first, aim to geographically surround it. By the time Barcelona falls, you should be good enough to attack Madrid.
IMO, just ignore the war in the Mediterranean Sea except for sinking enemy transports because your limited resources are best spent invading the French home territories.
Good tech is required, especially inf, because you have to spam troops and what can be cheaper than militia? Nothing.
I launched a two-pronged attack from the start, directing troops through the northern and southern coast of the peninsula. (You just need practice and luck to carry this out well)

With your other generals, march near the coast and eventually make your way to italy. It is a pain but once italy, spain, france, and netherlands capitulate, you can skip till you win.

Its true not to seize Madrid too soon. I captured Seville first. Using the given Forjaz with a gen on artillery, John or Jourdan did the trick. Then the next 2 following coastal cities. That's when I planted Wellesley. But after I seize Seville I used Murat and messna for the northern coast to capture. Then I returned to Madrid. Easy for me there. My donations went to either Sardinia and Sweden until after they joined in. Anyway good luck to your conquest.

It's weird. I can do it fully auto with IAP gens (excluding Wellesley), Karl, Massena and Barclay. Your team is very strong, it can't meet problem with Portugal 1798.
