I prefer Mahmud. He has very good skills.Desert fighting is still useful in Ottoman and Africa.John and Sophia are cheap, but with Netherlands farming method, expensive generals are generally more preferable.Kutuzov cannot match Mahmud.Aura buff is just too overwhelming.

You should go by what skill you'd like to see more of in the field,Storming fort or salvo e.g. Since you have the Aura buff there. I have John , for me he's perfect for taking those cities๐ as all he might need is someone like Alexander, Napoleon or even Mahmoud.

So I am working on 6 general 2-2-2 setup for campaign. I have Massena and Barclay for inf, Ney and Murat for cav, and Alexander for artillery. I want something better then Jourdan. Who do I get? There are many choices. Haven't unlocked Maria in campaign yet. Maybe sell Ney and get Dabrowski instead? Unless you priorotize artillery, in which case it is better to get 2 artillery generals first... Side note, on the challenges, artillery generals come in the most use because they are not usually "blocked" (you lose a star if you deploy artillery general).

Ney is definitely a wonderful early game general. But I definently think he needs a replacement for late game. He isn't bad there are just better choices. I think Lan is very good and Dabrowski is the best supporter for Murat. Idk if I should get Davout or not he is pretty good. In fact since cavalry is important late game I might have to do a 2-4-2 setup rather than a 3-3-2 setup.

My dream team/goal is to get Massena, Barclay, Karl, Murat, Davout, Dabrowski, Muhammad, and Alexander. Davout is ok, but I would definitely get Dabrowski if you have Murat. Together they will absolutely destroy, and Davout only has decently good abilities...

I recommend Lan, since she's just a beat with Murat and Dabrowski, even if you don't upgrade her skills, she should consistently hit infantry units for around 150 damage( depending on tech of course).
