My CavCom lineup (with skill levels):
Level 6: Atilla - 10,10,1 Blucher - 10,10,1 Suleiman - 1,10,1 Edward - 10,10,1 Nelson - 10,1,1 Yi Sun-sin - 10,1,10 Cleo - 1,10,10 Khalid - 10,10,1
Level 5: Bismarck - 1,10,1
Legendary items: Paladin full set; Keel Boots, Sword & Shield; Titan Axe & Ring; Odin Hammer & Armour.
For context my first run was an ArchCom lineup with three fewer items and here are some thoughts and conclusions, in no particular order.
Cavcom is the tougher of the two lineups and a different tactical approach is required: play to your strengths.
Both times I've finished with 9 "top" generals and didn't really settle on my first VIII until very late in the game.
Atilla is easily my favourite in this team and I dare say indispensable in a CavCom lineup, but I still rate Nobunaga as the game's MVP.
The keys to completing this game are patience and perseverance: for the daily medal missions, and to get you through the grinding and those other times when your progress grinds to a halt.
To paraphrase Churchill "When you reach 155 cities & 400 medals a day it is not the end; it is not even the beginning of the end; but it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning".
I'm now of the opinion that it can be completed with virtually any well constructed and suitably co-ordinated team: I think you'll always need some commanders and range fighters but eventually you can compensate for weaknesses with items and skill upgrades (probably).
I still think it's a fantastic game; the team synergy element is such an intriguing feature.
