When I am The Last Stand Soldier, I should ask you about it I will vote "yes", because there was charge of all American REGIMENT against Chinese MGs. In Vietnamese War, there were also lots of bayonet fights, especially in urban warfare. During Falkland War, there were 3 British bayonet charges against the enemy.

Mountbatten, imagine you are commander of small unit. You are completely outnumbered and surrounded. Your soldiers ran out of ammunition. Will you order to put bayonets or surrender without melee fight?

Nowadays, fighting are quite far. House to house fighting or Close Quarter Combat are actually rare, this is not Stalingrad anymore. Peoples that charge with bayonets are easily mowed down, and it's more effective to shoot from distance.

A trench knife or maybe even a spade is probably more effective than a bayonet in our modern age. A bayonet was really only effective because it inflicted a virtually fatal wound. A bayonet was triangular, and the medicine of the day was not enough to heal triangular wounds, making them quite effective to spread infection. In our modern age, however, our medical equipment can heal triangular wounds easily. A trench knife is a great melee weapon to use in combat. It has a great grip and handle, and the sharpness of it would easily pierce through flesh. You don't need to use it for mass charges, you use it for melee attacks and self defense. A spade does not provide much movement, but can allow for you to dig in, which allows some self defense. Again, not very good for modern war, but still can provide some self defense. And a spade itself is very sharp and, again, can cut through flesh very easily.
