By the way Jean Lannes, the Russian ''adventure'' was 1812 The Wehrmacht came 6km in front of Moscow I believe. Still Napoléon is by far better than Hitler. Hitler only won battles because of his commanders, people like von Manstein. But back to spreading Emmentaler around the world

Napoleon thought he could defeat the Czar in the winter by marching to Moscow. Ouch. I can't bear when people speak about general Winter regarding 1812 campaign. Napoleon seized Moscow in September. It was a strategic disaster for him. He believed that taking Moscow will open the negotiations with Czar for him, but Czar refused. Russian forces easly cut Napoleon's supply lines and all the possibilities for foraging for the army and especially cavalry. It wasn't a Winter - it was Russian military forces. The turning point of the campaing in military sphere was Battle of Maloyaroslavets were Napoleon was stopped and forced to go back for winter quarters. It was middle of October. Also - not Winter. It was Russian military forces. There were a lot of smaller battles on his way back to Smolensk. When Napoleon entered Smolensk (8th of November) where he believed supplies were gathered for winter it appered that Russian army didn't give a possibility to do that to a french foraging squadrons. By that time Napoleon had only about 40-45 thousand battle-worthy men. Compare it to the Great Army that was crossing Russian border. So, everything was done before winter. I don't know why that Myth about Napoleon's defeat bacause of General Winter is still cultivated in Western Europe.

But back to spreading Emmentaler around the world both hitler and napoleon make the same mistake they extended there supply lines to much by rushing forward. With no supply and russian forces all the way back to smolensk they could be happy to make it out alive.
