Conquests are fun, and are arguably the selling point of any Easytech games. If the conquest is too easy, then it's not really much of a challenge and people will just forget about it. If it's too hard( EW6 1815 coalition), then people will feel frustrated and will quit. Here are common mistakes people do in conquests, and how to remedy them.
1. Attacking enemy generals in Cities, or attacking elite units in a city
Just don't . You take unnecessary damage, and you may not even be able to take the city. Just plague or arson the city, then move your units 2 tiles away from the city, then instantly surround and capture the city once the enemy commander leaves it. If he doesn't leave, then just go capture nearby cities, as the unit will eventually leave the city.
2. Playing too defensively
Playing defensively at times is fine. But playing too defensively like not risking to attack major cities and simply waiting for your allies to help you when you can't afford to is a grave mistake. Sacrificing initiative for the unnecessary safety of your general (like building up his legion even though you only need to refill once), and not risking your generals to capture more cities may cost you the conquest, especially early on. Forture favors the bold , besides, prolonged conquests are boring.
3. Not positioning generals correctly
Just don't send your archers alone against the enemy, unless you plan on having them take a lot of damage. Use infantry units to scout out first, then let your cavalry follow through. Infantry units should be in the frontlines to support cavalry, and archers should be nearby. You can play risky and move your archers to the frontlines, as long as you adjust your other unit's position. If possible, have a unit protecting the backs of your generals, or have your general's back against a city or impassable terrain, to avoid morale downs. Units with march are great since you won't have that much problem positioning them right.
That's the 3 common mistakes most players do in conquests. I may add more if people suggest some. I could easily add in around 10 more to the list, but i'm lazy since i'm on vacation.
If you don't agree with me...
Also, it's sad that we don't have Alexander as a general.
