I know that there is really low chance that conquest will be changed/improved, but I wanted to share some ideas I had seen in other games that would (propably) fit in GC:R.
So here we go
1. More alliances/coalitions
Isn't it weird that so many tribes side so easily with greater powers from the other end of a map? Isn't it too predictible to have almost same outcomes in certain areas of the map? Doesn't it is dumb that there are ships sailing from another side of a map with legions of a faction that shouldn't have interest in it?
Well, there is a solution for this - make more than 2 alliances. It would be way more interesting if there would be several ones like Rome/Carthage and it's protectorates, tribe confederations, Greek/eastern alliances etc
It would be even better if they mustn't be in a state of constant war and that brings me to the second point...
2. Actual diplomacy
I know, I know. Easytech games are focused on warfare and diplomacy isn't really needed, but I thought that it would be actually interesting to diversify relations between factions, to make it less plain and predictable.
Also, diplomacy would be dependent more on "culture" rather than resources.
Most nations on the map (out of main ones), should start neutral but with certain approval/disapproval towards the others. It would be important to convince some of them to join your alliance, make them your tributaries (paying some of their income per turn), try to not let them join enemy or simple not to engage at all. Protectorate/vassal/tributary option should exist also for conquered ones, to strenghten local front.
Liberate could be valid too, since there is a lot of situations when enemy capture your city and next turn your ally recapture it but keeps it for themself.
With time when player would gather more and more cities, relations with other nations would drop and this would cause more wars and betrayals in the late game, making it less boring and more random.
Of course there shoudln't be option to peace out with your main enemy, but in other cases it would be nice.
3. More important events
Imagine nomad hordes or appearing on the map, sewing destruction and waging war against everyone, pirates pillaging coasts and historical events such as Spartacus Rebellion taking place during conquest or disasters like flood/plague/sandstorm/earthquake. Everything bringing more chaos and entertainment (or rage ) basically.
4. Unique regions/locations
There are already ones like wonders, mines, farms and different terrain types like deserts, forests and mountains, but I don't feel that they make a huge difference in warfare.
It would be awesome if there would be distinct in some way. For example Gaul/Germania/Dacia terrain would cause decreased movement for any nation that don't start in these regions, or desert bonuses to defence would apply only to original desert factions.
When it comes to cities, there are 2 things that could make them uniqe.
First - there would be local bonuses like increased starting level of certain unit types or increased income for farms for example
Second - You couldn't recruit high tier units in region that didn't belonged to your culture, but could recruit auxilliary local units, like Gaul Swordsmen (it actually exists to some degree in Expedition mode)
If you like some of these (or at least not hate them >.<), or have your own ideas on improving conquest experience, feel free to share your opinion and discuss how would it affect gameplay
