I haven't played Mythology, but all 1 to 3, I did play at some point or another.
I enjoyed the first two quite a lot. It was my first taste of RTS. Nowdays, I do feel that Starcraft Brood War is superior for diverse gameplay and balance though. AoE3 is however a complete disappointment in my opinion because it's pure eye-candy with lame mechanisms of making a decision between bad choices. The game felt so dumbed down while Microsoft put on a shiny new skin on it at the same time.
I would say AoE2 is the best of the 3 ones that I have played. It improved upon the first one.

I've not only played, but went thru all of them and I can only say all of them was good and I liked them all, but aoe3 kinda was the best when you went thru DLCs

Opinion on FE and AK? I believe that FE had good civs, not top-tier per se, but good. I haven't got AK yet, but will do in the future.

Oh Forgotten Empires, African Kingdoms, but that's for the HD version of AoE2, I never had it. Just the original.

AK was better and fixed many FE issues, but the new civs were too strong. And HD is still buggy on multiplayer, so most multiplayer apparently takes place on voobly.

There were expansion packs for original aoe2 too, but HD version is a mess up The expansions were possibly the only reason people bought it; HD was buggy and the only devs working on it are the expansion devs, who... make expansions. So no one is probably fixing the bugs soon...
