The free generals that you should immediately dismiss are Grant, Selivanov, Esperey and Cadorna. All of the other generals are at least decent.

Are the free generals actually good and end-game material? Because that'd actually be insane if some of them were Everyone except Grant, Selivanov, Esperey and Cadorna. Infantry: Nicholas I has great stats, mostly great skills (Tunnel is a good skill, however it has bad flexibility because Grenadiers are now exclusive to France and Russia) and can reach Emperor. A much better Infantry general than Grant. Carol I has good skills and stats. Even though he starts as a Prince, a good general that can reach Emperor is always nice. Cavalry: Sheridan has good skills, stats and can reach Emperor. Jackson has mostly very good skills and stats. He can also reach Emperor. One of the best cavalry generals. Moltke the Elder starts with impressive stats (30% total damage, and he is a Viscount) and has mostly good skills. Compensates the fact that he can only reach Duke. Todorov has mostly good skills. Even though he is another general that can only reach Duke, he starts as a Knight which means that he can gain a big amount of battle ability. Navy: Farragut, despite being able to only reach Duke, has good stats and great skills. Cobanli has good skills and stats despite being only able to reach Marquess. de Robeck is only a good Duke, but again has good skills and stats. Max Loof also has good skills and stats despite being only a Duke.

Here are the reasons why the others are bad:
Grant: Has 3 useless skills and the only good skill that he has is not enough to compensate. His stats also aren’t good enough. Selivanov: His main problem is that he lacks Salvo and that his other skills and stats aren’t good enough to compensate it. Esperey: Like Grant, he only has 1 good skill and his other skills and stats aren’t good enough to compensate. Cadorna: He may have 2/5 of Jackson's skills, but his stats are too lousy and his other skill isn’t good enough.

By my count there’s 13 (!) free generals. And Cadorna is among one of them, and I have to wait until the 10th campaign to get him... ugh. Wait, seriously? 20 slots and 13 free generals? That’s much. They’re dismissable, though.

All of the Free Generals are: Grant (US) Stonewall Jackson (US) Phillip Sheridan (US) David Farragut (US) Moltke the Elder (Germany) Max Looff (Germany) Andrei Selivanov (Russia) Cobanli (Ottoman) De Robeck (UK) Nicolas I (Austria) Carol I (Serbia) Georgi Todorov (Bulgaria) Esperey (France) Luigi Cadorna, a remarkably talentless commander (Italy) I thought Carol I was Romanian?

I would then definetely recommend McClennan. Although you can wait for the new update and textbooks but McClennan is good nontheless.

I don’t want to play a 1914 conquest and realize it’s much harder than what the boards were saying due to the update.

Shame Esperey is trash in the game, he contributed to the Greek front and the capitulation quite a bit. Most French generals in the game are terrible, which saddens me as I really like France.

Yes, but they squeezed the Romanian Campaigns into the Serbian one, so Carol is unlocked in the Serbian Campaign (Somehow the Serbs fought in the Battle of Marasesti) I thought that the Romanian Campaigns would be a good place to put a Rommel Cameo.
