So I did great progress through the game, reaching chapter VI without much trouble (couldn’t complete even chapter I in challenge mode, however) using only the free generals + Hotzendorf and Petain. Everything seemed fine until I started this mission today. It looks almost impossible to complete in the time schedule, since you need to build your troops and the starting ones are trash. Any tips (including buying a general) would be appreciated.

u need a decent Calvary General Who would you recommend? McClellan and Johnston? Moltke, Jackson and Sheridan are doing their job ok, but maybe I need reinforcements for this specific mission.

about the mission: Get a on Hussar (Moltke or Stonewall), upgrade the city, build factory near the borderline, get your free arty general on the artillery and Petain on the new infantry. Upgrade town once more, build howitzer and breastplate cavalry (if you haven't got the needed money priorize cavalry), put McClellan on cav unit, attack the first city. You should be able to destroy it by turn 10. If not, repeat. Destroy only the units attacking you. rush with hotzendorf on howitzer to the second city and depending on how is your ally doing, destroy the fort or the city if it's free from arty gens. Make another cav unit, can be hunting one, place other free gen there. After taking the southern city rush with everything (you should have over 1/2 health on at least arty and cavalry.) Bring to the second city militia rush after hotzendorf and cav. Attack with everything, until you can take it.
I made it in 13 turns using this tactic with a better team than yours, so it's definitely doable.

I did pass it today, in the last round. Figured out I was upgrading to level V the inicial city, and it wasn’t needed. My allies and Selivanov did save me in the last push toward the last enemy stronghold.
