If you're just starting, McClennan and Hotzendorf are still good choices as they don't require any skill changes. Johnston is also another good cavalry candidate. Meade and MacArthur are some pretty good gold generals too. I'm planning on taking a bit more of a cavalry focused team so my end game would be McClellan, Johnston, Jackson, Denta (Hopefully), Lee, Petain, Hindenburg, Ivanov, Hotzendorf, Beatty, and Hipper (Hopefully)

I have searched but cannot find a clear answer. I made something like a guide, but as they said: The choice is yours. Also, it's unadjusted to the textbooks update, but tbh, everything except infantry is still good. Fixable in the near future, but at least in honourable mentions.

Honestly to start with I’d suggest Hotzendorf. We get a beastly cavalry general for free early on, one bad artillery general later on and infantry is bad. Ivanov has more potential but you can get Hotzendorf earlier, and he doesn’t need any textbook investment.
So either one or the other.

You can buy any general you like and Bismarck can be very useful in History mode battles...
