How do I Promotions my generals from Green to Red and than purple?

I believe you need to get to Cold War to unlock red. Purple isn't recommended until much later as it costs 500 medals to promote.
Correction. Red is unlocked by Pacific and Purple is unlocked by Cold War
Green costs 10k
Red costs 50k
Purple costs 500 medals
