Hey guys, I wanted to create a shortcut thread for picking out generals.
Purple = The Best
Blue = Great (very good but not the best)
Green = Good
Yellow = Ok
Orange = Bad
Red = Very Bad, the worst purchases you can make.
This should not be controversial at all with the exception of perhaps some generals being "blue" instead of "purple" at its most offensive. Here we go!
IAPS:
Hannibal - best skills for a cavarly general. Amazing purchase.
Spartacus - only con is that he is only general.
Caesar - solid, but moves slowly. Besiege is meh. Plain is overpriced. You can make an archer general better than him easily.
Gold:
Octavian - Pretty good but rather overpriced. Mihredates and Drusus are better. Still a solid purchase if you want him.
Anthony - fastest general in the game by far. Cavarly commander at lvl 3 means he can attack up to 4 times in a turn. Charge is great for city snatching. Only minor con is breakthrough.
Arminius - very good skill set. Unfortunately his talent is bad. Worthwile purchase.
Huo - better talent than arminius, but loses jungle fighting and charge for raid (bad!) and counterattack. Arminius is arguably better but huo has a better crit rate. Both are amazing.
Mihredates VI - bad talent and besiege, but arch com, jf, and advantage are skills I gave my own commander. Very good but not perfect. Still, I recommend buying him after drusus.
Pompey - 4 great skills and a good talent. Whats not to like.
Vercingetorix - A bit overhated. STRONGEST CRIT DAMAGE INFANTRY GENERAL, ambush is great, jf a cheap good skill, and roar is amazing. His talent is bad and he is slow. Otherwise very good. But depending on the circumstances, there are times when none of his skills are active.
Crassus - 4 great skills and a good talent. Can one shot cities. As good as Pompey.
Scipio - Harder to use than Huo Arminius or Anthony, but still very good. Good city grabber and holder.
Burebista - slightly better than Agrippa on infantry but without the naval capabilities. He can deal lots of damage. But ver, agrippa, pompey, and crassus outshine him in terms of versatility.
Sertorius - doesn't suck, but crassus is far better (better movement, better rank, better damage, better talent...).
Surena - awful. A good talent but not one "great" skill. Only good archer skill is accuracy. Even dolabella is better.
Silver:
Wei: cav com good. Everything else is horrible. Please, get a gold cav instead. You will be less dissappointed. Varus is 180 medals yet isn't that much worse.
Agrippa: Very powerful. Huge output. 4 good skills and a great talent. A great hybrid.
Drusus: Advantage and Inspire - Very good. Far better than Surena. Imo best archer. Breaks the stereotype that archers are very easy to encircle and kill. Lacks arch com though.
Tiberius: Great skills but sucky talent. Still very good.
Labienus: Same as tiberius.
Bato: Same as Labienus
Li: arch com: good (only at lvl 1 though which is expensive to fix. accuracy: good. General rank: good. Marksman and talent: very bad. Not worth getting, as Cleopatra is a far better bargain, but still good.
Ariovistus: horrible. Talent sucks, torch and destroy sucks. There are bronze generals better than him (ex. Flaminius)
Tigranes: fast and accuracy is a good skill. But everything else about him sucks. Plus only legatus and lvl 1 skills. He is as effective as Trebonius with accuracy.
Lepidus: Assualt: very good. Hide: good. Everything else: terrible.
Commius: will be expensive to upgrade, but comparable to huo, arminius, and scipio in skill. Guerilla, Inspire, and Siege are very good skills for cavarly.
Lucullus: Not horrible, but still there are far better choices (Agrippa)
Cleopatra: worse than agrippa due to archers having less hp than invantry on navy. Still very good. Better than Li. Better than every other naval general but agrippa. Still great.
Orodes II: Same problem as lepidus. Assualt and ubran are great. His talent is very hard to use and destroy is horrendous. Plus only 6 stars in cavarly.
Maroboduus: Siege is very good. Rain of arrow can go very well with siege (due to the flag). Everything else is not the best though. Cativolcus is cheaper and better. Still not bad.
Cassivellanous: nah, jk, he is horrible. All of his skills are bad for archers. He is very bad.
Phraates IV: torch is horrible, talent is horrible, shield wall is rather good, and mountain fighting is decent.
Cicero: Roar is amazing. Tunnel is also pretty good. If you were to get him, he would be effective. Arguably better than Flaminius.
Cassius: Not massive output, but a good supporting general. But his talent is amazing, ambush is great, and jungle fighting is good. I would save for ver though. Recommended over Flaminius.
Sextus Pompey: a mediocre naval general and nothing else. His rank, talent, and sailor stop him from being very bad.
Bronze:
Chen: bad talent. Counterattack doesn't go well with inf commander. Weak stats.
Crixus: decent. But there are far better choices even in the tier that he is.
Dolabella: very fast general. Advantage is very good. Mountain fighting will also be decent due to his amazing talent. Legatus is a great rank. A solid purchase.
Flaminius: Decent. Talent is bad though. There are better bronze generals available than him (Ambiorix). Still good combination of pros makes him a good starter.
Ptolemy: no comment.
Gannicus: infantry crixus. But segestes exists who is better.
Hasdrubal: charge is at lvl 1, making crixus a better purchase.
Cativolcus: talent sucks but his skills and rank are very good. better than marobrooduus.
Herod: good rank, not awful skills. Will be expensive to make good but has potential.
Ambiorix: Siege and Inspire are a very good combination. Can be on anything. Better than Cativolcus or Marobroodus. Too bad his rank and torch sucks.
Achillas: pretty good, but you can do better.
Dellius: great talent and rank but skills are horrible. You can put him on anything.
Varus: bad talent, but his skills are very good. Good rank too. Great bargain.
Indutiomarus: better than crixus or hasdrubal but still not good enough imo. Cheapest chilliarch and guerilla is still good.
Artavasdes II: decent skills. Talent sucks. You know, the usual. Consider ambiorix herod or pinarius instead.
Segestes: not as much of a monster as he used to be (scare got nerfed). You can do better. Still great and cheap skill set. Would be yellow but intercept and jf are dirt cheap and good.
Pinnes: good skills, although low level. Decent hybrid. Very expensive to improve.
Pinarius: fantastic skills. But you can still do better.
Mandubracius: Brutus but even worse. Will have zero skills active the majority of the time.
Brutus: assualt is very good. A decent naval hybrid. But why settle for medicore when you can get an amazing general.
Serapion: decent skills. But you can do far better.
Pacorus I: very overpowered for how cheap he is. 7 stars cavarly, guerilla, inspire. A fantastic general.
Pedius: a fantastic beginning archery general. Pedius will surprise you at how strong he is.
Pothinus: Strongest naval general of the bronze tier. But why would you get him other than for drill missions.
Trebonius: march is only at lvl 1 so it has no effect. Otherwise, just pedius but without the extremely overpowered talent. He may be the cheapest general in the game, but upgrading march to lvl 2 costs 90 medals. And lvl 2 only adds one hex in conquest. You need lvl 3 for campaign bonuses. That combined with his horrible rank, you might as well just purchase dolabella. Even with a pompey gladius, there are far better choices than Trebonius (Pedius and Dellius) for an archer.
