I do quite alright at EW4, but I really can't seem to win in this game. Even in a relatively powerful nation like Russia, I start out OK then get chewed up quickly. My units don't hit hard, or the enemy hits that much harder, and my generals get chewed up by having to do it all, then comes collapse.
I have the two basic free Generals, and about 800 medals.
Is there something really basic I'm missing here? Is EW6:1914 any different? Or am I potentially faced with reinstalling EW4 on my android tablet and seeing if this download is any more stable than the previous one?

Initial start is pretty difficult but once you either get Ney or Massena, it'll get a lot better. Just do the campaign until you can get one of those generals and start farming Netherlands 1798 for medals and gold. Also EW6:1914 is one of the easier ET games if you want to try it out.

No, it's just that conquest is actually legitimately very difficult at the start of the game in 1804 because the enemies take tons hits to kill and the enemy AI is very aggressive compared to EW4 AI. Since you just have 2 free generals (I'm guessing Jourdan and Clinton, who are both worthless) and only have 800 medals, I assume you haven't gotten far, in which case you really can't beat any conquests aside from 1798 Netherlands. Also, power does not equate to easiness. Russia is actually really tough at the start because you can't save HRE or anyone and you'll eventually have a giant enemy army at your door which you can't possibly beat. Get Ney and the Ambulance ASAP. That alone should make it possible to get Murat and after that the game becomes much easier, and you'll actually stand a chance in conquests! Stay away from 1812 and 1815 at the moment though. 1815 in particular is absolutely insane even for endgame players.

1914 is way easier though because you get some uber generals like Stonewall Jackson for free and enemy generals aren't nearly maxed in conquests.

pathdoc, EW4 is the last game in the EW series in which you can use S/L in Campaigns or Conquests. You'll probably need some time to get used to having 1 save slot which is controlled by auto save. The same goes for the different mechanisms such as Stables and Factories being facilities that require the owner of the city to hold both the city and facility to spawn troops (EW6:1804) instead of key targets which can spawn troops once taken (EW4). It is true that the AI in Conquest is far more aggressive. You will experience the AI sending out all its troops to crush its enemies and seize their provinces. However, with experience, you can slowly get used to this and improve. I may have made a few Conquest guides which can be completed without gens, but you have to rely on good tech to win. You can use them as reference. There are also gen path selection threads and gen discussion threads which can guide you in forming a strong endgame team immediately.
