I'm just curious how this skill works. Do units have to hug the general with the skill or is it in effect at any distance?

I believe it only has a 1 hex aura. Not sure if it affects the general with the skill though

Definitely one hex. You don't have to hug them though, just make them hug your offensive gens haha
It does not benefit itself, aura skills are generally not self-beneficial

This skill is pretty underrated. While I know it is disliked because of no self benefit, it is an awesome support skill especially at the end games. This skill buffs my party up to +120 damage output (that's insanely huge). You only need to give it the medal and surround it with 4 units to attack. It buffs +30 damage to each of your surrounding units with medal. It makes a light infantry hit as hard as a howitzer (28+30=58).
But it is not very useful on tanks as tanks are usually used to single-handedly handle the battlefield. However, artilleries are always accompanied by other units. So crowd tactics is very useful on artilleries. Put it on Konev as he has 2 empty slots. Because of it, Konev is my 2nd most useful general after Guderian as it buffs +30 damage to his surroundings. Even light infantries are fearsome if they were put besides my Konev.
It is definitely the only skill that fits Konev. If you were to add plain fighting to him, he would be Leeb with only +6 damage but -1 movement. Because neither artillery ability nor plain fighting stacks with accuracy and artillery leader.
