I sense that they are not like generals - i.e. you cannot put them on units the way you can in EW4 - but is there a detailed guide to making best use of them?
Just finished my first Netherlands conquest and unlocked Ariel.

You can deploy them in a city that has a palace to give a buff. That buff can be upgraded under the princess menu where you can give loads of tulips to make their buff better. The two best "palace princesses" are Sophia (damage reduction) and Louise (damage buff). Maria (Cavalry discount) and Isabela (Artillery discount) are not that far away either imo. Sakurako (knowledge boost) is really useful, but not necessary, for one mission. Most of the other aren't that great.
You can actually buy them as generals too, but you once you buy one as a general they can't be used as a palace princess. This is quite relevant for Sophia in particular because she's very good as a palace princess but is also a pretty great artillery general. They're usually incredibly cost-efficient (but not amazing) generals. The three best "Battle princesses" are Lan (fantastic cavalry), Sakurako (fantastic navy) and Sophia (very good artillery).

Does this buff apply only to that city with that palace, or to all cities/ports/stables/gun factories etc.? Silly question, I know, but I'm feeling my way here and I want to make the best possible use of everything I have.

It will say like 900 medals and some tulip amount to convert. So it is not really worth it .

If you want to buy princess as a general, you should upgrade her to the max level with tulipan. I mean that higher level as palace princess she has, better battle ability and defense. Just use tulips to upgrade their stats instead of spending gold and medals
