Here’s an interesting text about a (for me) rather unknown sideshow of the Napoleonic era: the Polish legion and the pitiful role it had to play in the Haitian liberation war, 6500 km away from the country the Polish actually wanted to liberate. Interesting also because the Haitian revolution was the only successful slave uprisiing that let to the foundation of a state which was both free from slavery, and ruled by non-whites and former captives. Haiti became the first independent Latin-American country. The article throws a pretty bad light on Napoleons selective interpretation of human rights and the ungrateful treatment of his most faithful foreign soldiers. Funny to see Bonaparte is still seen positive in today’s Poland. www.soldiers-of-misfortune.com/history/polish-legion-haiti.htm

But it is sad how a nation that claimed would be a republic turns into a empire and keeps slavery.
