George McClellan is a strong general that isn’t too expensive and can also be used in History Mode.

While you don’t get an artilleryman before Selitrashnov. Taking history mode into account, I actually think Vladimir Vazov is the best «starter» general you can get. Horne is going to be slightly more efficient at taking down forts in the short term, but not by much, and he’s basically useless in the one history mode mission he’s available in. It’s not even wasteful to invest in Vazov like it is for other «cheap starter generals» since you WILL need him for history mode. Putnik is if you’re extremely desperate, but he’s significantly worse than Vazov. And I just can’t recommend getting too many coin generals at the start since you really need gold for a ton of stuff like the ambulance and tech.

You are correct, an artillery general should be prioritized.

SolidLight, I would be careful about upgrading tech, though. Because making it too high can result in the History Mode missions being hellish.

If you're confident to get on History Mode fast then get the aforementioned artillery generals. If you're planning on the route of Campaign-Conquest.Get either Ivanov or Beseler(Gold tiers in artillery and bound to be the best end game generals)When you first get them, just dont change their skills yet esp Beseler's Storm Fort as it gives you ann edge in cracking cities)When you're good to go(with enought amount of textbooks)change Ivanov's inspiration to Jungle Fighting or get him Artillery expert.Same goes for Beseler's Strom Fort

But always buy the mobility upgrades as they are extremely useful.

SolidLight , I would be careful about upgrading tech, though. Because making it too high can result in the History Mode missions being hellish. Ok, what's the alternative though? leave your tech at a low level and put up with terrible stats for campaign and conquest? I don't think I could do that.

I don't think I could do that. hmm I think its pretty smart, just that one should expect to ditch this doctrine pretty quickly. Just see how many history missions one can win with low tech, and then give up and get tech upgrades for the sake of game progression. Until someone proves that certain missions are easier when done with low tech level (i.e. they cant be easily done with high/maxed tech), this method will indeed be unorthodox and unpopular.

Hi I'm in the middle of the Civil War campaigns. Who should I get as my first general excluding the ones given free. Vazov and maybe then Putnik to support Vazov. Don’t get a cavarly general because you get 3 pretty decent cavarly generals early on in the game (Moltke (2nd mission german campaign), Jackson (best cavarly general in the game w. the exception of Frunze IAP, and Phillip Sheridan (Green but has a good skill set)). So you are more than covered on that front. Your best choices are: Macmahon and Vazov, with Putnik being a decent support for vazov

Get MacMahon -> Beat the civil war campaign -> get Vazov (and optional, Putnik) and then 1. Ivanov 2. Straussenberg 3. Besseler in that order.
