Ivanov is an offensive general while Hindenburg is a defensive one and he can easily destroy forts.
First artillery general to buy is Meade or wait a little longer and buy Vazov.
First golden artillery general you have to buy is Beseler. His skills are too perfect and will help you a lot.
After you bought Beseler and completed many missions, you can buy Ivanov, Hindenburg, Hotzendorf or Radko Dimitriev.

why is beseler better than ivanov or hindenburg? higher possible stats, which makes him your key damage dealer. Hindenburg has the potential to be a hard-hitting artillery support (artillery commander and defensive formation that increases attack and defense of surrounding artillery units respectively), and Ivanov is a good to have. You can try out many combinations with Ivanov, from gearing him as a terrain artillery gen to a gen with dogfight

Both of mine are maxed and have the same skills, so its easy to compare. Nonetheless all arty-discussions lead to the same answer: buy Ivanov/Beseler, after that Ivanov/ Beseler and then Hindenburg

The three are great artillery generals that you will eventually have all anyway. Max potential is not relevant at this point since by the time you have the resources to max one, you would likely have all the three. There is no wrong decision here because, as mentioned earlier, they are all great. So the real question is, "which initial skill set do you like?" On this regard, I will not pick Hindenburg because he does not have Tactic Master skill. Then, among the remaining two, I pick Ivanov because I prefer his beard to Beseler's mustache. Well, it's a matter of preference. Ultimately, if you cannot decide, just roll a dice (1 & 2 = Hindenburg, 3 & 4 = Ivanov, 5 & 6 = Beseler). It will definitely turn out to be fine. The initial skill set will become irrelevant when you have accumulated enough textbook to reset skills. And the importance will shift to max potential. But, well, by that time, you will already have all the three.

For infantry, you can buy Falkenhayn/Zhekov/Gallwitz. They are cheap and good price performers. And then you need to buy MacArthur, his stats make him a very good general which makes him a must-have general. Later, you can buy MacMahon or Boyadzhiev ( I dont recommend boyadzhiev if you already bought the generals I listed above, bcuz he is capped at duke) For golden infantry, buy Strassenburg first. He is a very good general with both aura and terrain bonus. You can later buy Lee,Boroevic or Haig. For cavalry general, buy McClellan. His skills are 4/4 ( you can change plain fighting tho). After that you wont need to buy another cavalry general for a long time as Jackson, Moltke the Older (those two are already free) and McClellan will carry the whole team. When you have enough medals, buy Plumer. He wont dissapoint you. You can later buy Sidney Johnston, Joffree or Stepanovic.

If you think the German Mustache is no match for the Russian Beard, Alfred von Tirpitz has the qualities of both, and he's proudly Prussian

He was the man who turned the German Imperial Navy into one comparable to the British Royal Navy.
