I am not sure if this was done before. Overall, when i go for starting trainer generals, i always choose generals with spy skill (arnold, sulkowski) and also artillery generals. Why? I browse through the skill list and I noticed that spy skill gives a 50% increase in attack (although limited to forts). I think damage wise, this skill gives the biggest increase in percentage. Assault art gives a higher damage but not consistently. Bugle/Accurate/Strike/Siege Master do not come close in terms of the percentage.
When grinding for rank, i also noticed that the higher the damage, the faster the leveling up process. So by exploiting this skill, rank items (art of war/on war) , coinciding with the unit restraint (https://european-war-4.boards.net/thread/12788/reference-unit-restraint); you can setup the trainer general to hit hard on forts for faster leveling!
So how this is done? You find a campaign scenario where you can assign a general (with the right items) in an unit good against forts(guards, siege artillery, artillery). Take a hit and then restart the stage. All this should be done in turn 1 so you do not need a save and you do not need to eliminate the enemy fort. I believe that this can be done mechanically fast without much thinking.
Now the next problem is where to find a perfect scenario for this? I found three cases. The easiest one is in Imperial Eagle Conquer North Africa scenario. The starting location has an enemy coastal fort nearby and you can assign an infantry or artillery general to do the job.
The next one is in Imperial Eagle prussia counterattack scenario. Here you assign a general in the siege artillery. The only catch here is you need the general to be 4stars in movement. However, this stage gives the quickest way to rank up! (I tried this with sulkowski, swapping movement/attack items and even though he does not have artillery stars, he hits with 80+ damage! However, this works best with princess like sakurako, isabella, regrouped sophia)
The last one is in coalition war of glory scenario. This one is the best training ground for your cavalry guards. Although from experience, the damage is lower than the aformentioned ones.
Take note that you can also do this on generals with accurate skill but with lower damage. Training princess will also work (sophia, isabella, sakurako, lan, victoria)
For the lazier ones, you can assign an autoclicker to do the job. No setup, quick and easy.
