I have spent several hours looking for an answer. Looked at all the threads. What the heck are the tiny grey icons on the game screen that look like barbwire fence, artillery guns on the coastline, and a U looking thing?

I believe you are referring to defences built on land by certain inf units. One of them is the Trench with a caved in rectangular block. It provides additional defence against inf units. The barbed wire likely represents the Fence. It provides additional defence against cav units. The icon with three blocks stacked together represents the Bunker which provides additional defence against arty units. The icon that looks like a gun is a Coastal Fort which provides additional attack against ships.
