I have made my commander an archer, I am on battle of Segovia and I have 495 medals. I haven't tried any conquests.
I am thinking I should buy a cavalry general, though I am not sure which one

Pacorus (98 medal) is a safe choice. He is cheap and good. His cavalry ability can reach level 7 and his talent is invaluable. Commius (398 medal) is considered an upgraded version of Pacorus, with exactly the same skill plus Siege and his cavalry ability can go up to level 8.
Note that this game gives a very generous refund. So you can take advantage of that by hiring cheap good generals without upgrading their skills (since that costs medals) and dismiss them when you have enough medal for top-tier generals. In Pacorus case, it costs you only 5 medal to take him into service for a while then dismiss.

Pacorus is definitely not a wrong choice. I picked him myself but it's just a matter of preference whether you want to spend more on Commius, which you will get a 95% refund when he is dismissed. Keep in mind that the medal spending on skill scrolls will not be refunded so if you do not plan to use him as your final lineup then it's a good idea not to spend any medal upgrading his skill.
My suggestion is to go for Pacorus and save up a bit more for the top tier cavalry generals. By that time you may either dismiss Pacorus to get the refund or keep him in service as a secondary cavalry general.

I think I will go for commnius, I looked at him and he seems great, I will be saving my game to the cloud before purchasing to be sure

Infantry General !
All campaign battles you will have infantry at start. Easy to replenish since you only need barracks.
Aim for gold generals; may be very expensive but will not dissapoint. For long term your investment will pay off. Go for Pompey/Crassus/Vercingetorix.
Pompey is a mobile tank with good damage, Crassus is a city breaker and Vercingetorix is a offencive overall.
