Sardinia 1798
GEOGRAPHIC POSITION: Off the west coast of the Italian peninsula, Sardinia nominally consists of two islands, north and south. The north island is two hexes across from east to west and four deep from north to south. The south island, separated by one hex of strait, is two hexes east-west and six hexes north-south.
STARTING RESOURCES: In 1798 Sardinia starts the war with 200 gold, 200 metal, 600 food.
CITIES: There is an un-named Level 1 City on the North Island, which starts the war occupied by France (as is the entire island). Cagliari on the southeast coast of the South Island is Level 3.
ARTILLERY: None in this year.
STABLES: None in this year.
SEAPORTS: None in this year.
FARMS: Each island possesses one farm.
MILITARY GEOGRAPHY: Essentially all of both islands is high land or forest that impedes movement to some degree for non-infantry units. Any unit on the two central hexes of North Island can attack, and be attacked by, any unit elsewhere on the island. Artillery in the central hexes of South Island can reach anywhere on the island. Cagliari is safe from artillery landing on the northernmost hex of South Island.
STRATEGIC POSITION: Enemies are located to the northeast (Italy), northwest (France) and west (Spain). Neutral territory extends in a band from southwest to southeast (Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia). To the east lies the Kingdom of Naples (including the land-mass of Sicily to the southeast). Beyond Naples across the Adriatic lies the Ottoman Empire - geographically Greece, then Turkey across a further strait.
MILITARY ASSETS: Sardinia begins the war with the following:
1) INFANTRY - Amadeo III (54 Health, 4 Nobility, Architecture, Nobleman) begins the war commanding triple Grenadier infantry.
2) CAVALRY - none.
3) ARTILLERY - A single unit of double light artillery exists on South Island.
4) NAVY - a single privateer vessel stands to the southwest.
IMMEDIATE THREATS: Napoleon, with one attending infantry unit, is just a few hexes to the northwest and Sardinia is his immediate destination. Marmont sometimes follows. Either is too strong to be faced with your starting units.
OPPORTUNITIES: There are open sea-ports on the west coast of Italy and the Kingdom of Naples (one immediately adjacent to the City of Naples; the other on the east coast of Sicily). There is frequently an open stable in NAPLES. There are farms in NAPLES to seize. Africa, being neutral, is easy to turn hostile and steal its resources. A British naval taskforce starts the war to the east of Sicily and is commanded by NELSON. In a desperate strait, Napoleon can be led into Nelson and distracted.
There is an opportunity to land in Ottoman Greece and begin afresh from there. AMADEO III and the artillery unit are strong enough to co-operate in taking carefully chosen cities.
The ruler of Naples is NUNZIANTE, and he is extremely variable in how much stealing he will tolerate. He has been known to turn hostile after both sea ports are taken, but also to be tolerant of capturing most of his buildings. Save/Load is strongly advised before capturing.
PARTICULAR NOTES: AMADEO III's Architecture skill is particularly useful for upgrading on a discount when you are fleeing and have very few gold or metal. Try to upgrade Cagliari one or two times before you leave, but if you cut it too fine or dawdle too long, Napoleon will catch and kill you.
FOR DISCUSSION:
1) Under what conditions can you stay and fight it out successfully?
2) What is your experience on going to Africa vs. fleeing to the east (Naples and points beyond)?
