I did it pretty much this way: (as Gog3 maps are enormous, I've connected two screenshots to make it clearer. This is a kind of experiment):
Red is your main army movement. It is just a scheme, you should go different if situation needs it. Try taking the first two cities. After that regroup, go south, take the city and secure the Singapore's shore with your troops (and by secure I mean destroy). Go further south to Singapore, take it and destroy leftover enemies.
Blue is your navy movement. It's rather simple - help with the northern city and raid the shore. If needed, aid with planes and some units (pink colour)
Cyan is where you should drop your infantry as paratroopers. They can land anywhere on the island, but that spot is good, because they don't stall your army and deal with some units. If they start taking considerable dmg, leave that city to your ally and go to Singapore through the mountains. (as I did)
Small tip:
Your ally is fully capable of killing every enemy on the western side of map, so no need to help him. If you do not aim for Singapore in 16 turns, you may as well wait for western forces and go together. I've easily done two side quests by simply playing through, so I don't believe you should worry about that.

Can you go more in depth? In what sense? The tactical aspects? IMO, the strategy used is quite applicable.

It may be better to spawn a 3X inf reinforcement rather than a sub.
Disclaimer: I'm being more bold with this because I have lvl 4 Inf, tank and arty. My navy is at lvl 2 and air is at lvl 3.
Methodical advance strategy, based on Alexyx's pictorial guide: Equip a Panther onto the tank and place your best tank gen on it. Equip a Wiking onto an inf unit and place your best inf gen on it and the other is to be equipped with Paratrooper. Place a Transport onto the arty unit and place your best arty gen on it. Deploy your best navy gen onto the stronger pre-spawned ship. Concentrate all your firepower on the nearest coastal city. Keep your inf at close to or 3X full bars. March onto the central base and move southward to the last base on the mainland. Meanwhile, the navy is to try to attack the SE bases from afar. Watch out for the nearby sub! As your cross the Johore Straits, use your aty to provide cover fire against the inf at the nearly coastal arty. Deploy an inf reinforcement at the central city, equip him with Jaegar and send him and your other paratrooper to the NW of Singapore. Use the factories to heal your tanks. Then, use your concentrated arty to attack Singapore city in the south. Beware the enemy armour and the 4X or 5X British gen in the city centre! Spawn the last inf reinforcement in the NE coastal city, equip him with Akita or Grenediers and march him along with the mainland arty to finish off the British troops in the SE. Beware the navy gen! Once done, your ships are to rush towards the port at Singapore city to heal. Your ground troops are to force a river crossing to attack the city.
