Hello my fellow EasyTech game players, after a long and very unexpected break from this website, we're gonna return with these things. What we're gonna do today is answer the question above by seeing whether Ivan Bagramyan should be bought in World Conqueror IV as a general. General overview, he's in Bronze tier and he costs 635 medals, with a Major rank (which increases the HP of any unit he's on by 128%) and that's really all we have for him. I'll be honest as to my knowledge on him, I know absolutely nothing about him. With all that out of the way, let's just jump into it.
1. Skills
Oh boy, am I gonna enjoy this first one. Bagramyan's first skill is the infamous Level 1 Elastic Defense. I've made my feelings for this skill common knowledge, and I think everyone can agree that this is the worst skill in the game. While I still definitely think this would have been better as a buffing skill instead of HP restoration, the amount it restores is pretty good... when maxed out. Regaining 4 HP each round won't really help much in any given case. As mentioned in the Kuribayashi analysis, this skill can't be unlocked and available for upgrades until WWII Pacific Axis 09 "Time of Glory" Normal. Now, before we move on to the next skill, here's the deal-io. Bagramyan is very hard to lump into a category, and one could say he doesn't really belong to any of the other groups. In fact, I can really only think of 2 other generals that can fit this situation. Needless to say, all 3 of these generals can have 5 stars in Infantry, but their skills (in my personal and completely unprofessional opinion) make them seem more like hybrid generals.
Ivan's second skill slot contains Level 1 Mountain Fighting, and what that skill does is add an additional 5 damage when the unit he's on is on a hill or (obviously) a mountain. We're gonna be using a quadruple stack Mechanized Infantry, a triple stack Heavy Tank, and a triple stack Rocket Artillery for these examples. A quadruple stack Mechanized Infantry does 43 damage, a triple stack Heavy Tank does 61 damage, and a triple stack Rocket Artillery does 63 damage. Bagramyan has 2 stars in both Infantry and Artillery, and 3 stars in Armored. This gives both Infantry and Artillery units 8 additional damage, while giving Armored 13 additional damage, resulting in damage totals of 51/74/71 for the units mentioned above. However, Mountain Fighting increases those 8 and 13 additional damage to 13 and 18, basically giving another star's worth of damage. The final sum of the damage done by the units is 56 for the Mechanized Infantry, 79 for the Heavy Tank, and 76 for the Rocket Artillery. I think I can confidently say this is Bagramyan's best skill, and I can say this with even more courage as it can be upgraded from the minute you start the game.
Lastly, the third skill Bagramyan possesses is Level 2 Crossfire, which gives Bagramyan a 12% boost in counterattack damage. Now. because I feel like I talked way too much in the last skill, I'll try to keep it brief here. We're gonna take the damage numbers that were just for Bagramyan alone (51/74/71) and add the 12% boost. We've got decimals. so we're just gonna round to the nearest whole number for final results of 57/83/80 as counterattack damage, give or take. However, now we take the numbers for Bagramyan on a mountain and THEN add the counterattack damage. The final results are 63/89/85 damage, WITHOUT taking into consideration for what unit is doing the damage, the abilities of the units Bagramyan is on, or the terrain the attacking unit is on. It's really a bunch of craziness on how the calculations work when doing these things, AND I LOVE IT! However, slap back to reality (and away from the arithmetic), this skill can't increase the counterattack damage until you reach WWII Pacific Allies 04 "Guadalcanal" Hard, so that should be enough to shatter the illusion. Bagramyan sounds like he could do a lot of damage, but why do people consider him trash? That question will be answered in...
2. Competition
Now, I'm not really sure as to the rest of the community, but in my young and inexperienced eyes, there's only 2 other generals in Bronze that I consider as hybrids. Those two generals are Slim and Tassigny. However, whether or not they're considered hybrids or not, these two also aren't exactly known for their ability to shine on the battlefield. Slim and Tassigny both have the upper hand for Infantry stars when unlocked (4 stars and 3 stars respectively, compared to Bagramyan's 2 stars), however, they can all reach a potential 5 stars in that field. In the Artillery, only Tassigny is slightly better with his potential 3 stars. Without that, him and Bagramyan are on equal footing. We'll discuss Slim more when we get to him. Without a doubt though, Bagramyan is better than both in Armored combat, with 3 stars when purchased and a potential of 4 stars. Compared to Bronze tier's other "hybrids", he doesn't really struggle, but the rest of Bronze tier is something else. I figured we all know which names are the ones that pop up in the "rest of Bronze tier" section, so I figured it should be removed from these posts. I think it's pretty well established that Bronze tier is Messe's playground, and that will be discussed more in the next review-ish analysis. However, the most obvious reason one wouldn't really buy Bagramyan is...
3. Savings
To no one's surprise, Bagramyan is simply inferior to any other hybrids. One thing the other hybrids in Silver and Gold all have is the ability to have other skills. Now, I myself would say there are about 5 hybrids in Silver and 2 in Gold. Going through them all would be a pain for sure, so we're just gonna discuss the general that is considered the best hybrid in the game. Being 1015 medals more expensive at a cost of 1650 medals, Timoshenko is THE perfect example of what a hybrid should be. Comparing Bagramyan to him is honestly a joke. Crowd Tactics is FAR better than that pathetic skill Elastic Defense, the terrain skills would be considered equal had it not been Level 3 Plain Fighting vs Level 1 Mountain Fighting, and I personally lean more toward Crossfire than Camouflage in this case though. The difference? The empty skill slot, which can be used to add the greatest skill a hybrid can have, being Rumor. While my personal opinion is that Bagramyan is just a Timoshenko Lite/Diet Timoshenko/Timoshenko 2.0, that view of him is clearly being too kind.
4. Conclusion
To answer the question above which is the title, Bagramyan is definitely not recommended if you want to make it through the game. He does have great skills that boost his damage and is superior to those in Bronze tier who can be seen as having somewhat similar roles. However, step out of that role as a Bronze hybrid and everything good about him kind of falls flat on its face. In this recipe for never getting out of the HQ, we also have a general which can actually reward you for having the time and patience to grind and recruit him, possessing at least 3 skills superior to each of the skills Bagramyan has. If you do wind up recruiting him like very few people have done, the thing you need to keep in mind is that his only niche seems to be those last stand scenarios that require bunkers. The other thing you need to keep in mind is that you shouldn't really expect anything good from him.
Well, that took longer than expected. Quite literally, due to the hiatus I took unexpectedly. I've been George Washington, and I'll see you all in the Messe analysis/review.
