Both groups were part of the senate, whereas optimates are relying on patriticians and populares on the plebeians, the people. optimates' goal is the securing of the power of the senate over the people, whereas populares aimed to have the backup of the people. Marius lost the battle of colline gate, which was the dececisive battle, against Sulla. |

the major failure of marius was the loosing of the key battle of colline gate. Sullas triumph gave him the absolute power over rome.
