I have read many threads regarding the mistakes done by beginners like buying poor generals, investing medals in the wrong things...
So I decided to come up with a thread. It is like a precaution before playing the game.
In short -
1. Don't buy tier 3 generals (except trainers)
2. Don't buy useless items
3. Don't upgrade your armies in campaigns
4. Don't upgrade your generals with medals
5. Get the locked units IF necessary

1. Don't buy tier 3 generals (except trainers)
This is the most common mistake which everyone does when they are new to the game. Many have bought tier 3 generals only to realise that they are not good for anything. Some of them are so worse that it is just a unit having a head to show for. Some of the generals show many skills like disguise, transport, trench, all of which are not known to work.
People like me think of buying a cheap general and starting afresh and train those generals to max rank and nobility. Don't do that. I know that you may not have enough patience to grind out medals. But, see this - Free to play, no grinding path to Victory.
It is an excellent guide to buy medals and items without grinding medals.
Investing in tier 3 generals is not a wise choice as they do not have any skills no stars. Also, when your are not willing to spend money on the game in buying IAP generals, you can buy those generals which have -
1. Good stars in their field
2. Skills which are compatible with their area of specialization.
For example - Napoleon is not recommended to buy as a general as he specialises in artillery but does not have the skill set to become a beast. However, when you have 5 stars in a field with all "working" skill sets, you get a beast who can defeat almost anybody other than him. The perfect example of this is Suvorov. Put him on double machine gun and then you can flow into the enemy territory like a river. Same goes to Lannes. To see his strength, do the 1809 conquest as any country other than France. You will see that Ney and Junot will perish in Spain but Lannes will hold out in Bilbao valintly like a rock.
For tier 2 generals, Dobeln is the best as he has 5 infantry stars and good skills even. For cavalry, buy Golitsyn as he deals a lot of damage to the enemy units. For more information, see this -
1. Recommended IAPs
2. Generals Ranking
3.Cheap general list
However, don't overlook tier 3 completely as they provide you with trainers. Trainers are the ones who increase the star of the generals regrouped into by 1 star. If suppose you regroup an artillery trainer into Sophia, you increase her artillery stars to 4. If you want to know which general have a training skill, it will listed as one the skill in their skills (that makes Agha not completely useless π)

2. Don't buy useless items
I know most of the newbies don't buy items first, but still, do not waste your medals on the useless items. The ones I do not recommended are -
Items with low bonus.
This includes the bayonet which gives +1 attack and also the +2 and +4 items for infantry.
For cavalry, it includes the +1 and +2 attack items. Go for the cavalry pistol as they are more worth the price. For artillery, there are again +1 and +2 attack and +4 gunpowders.
Directly save your medals for +6 items for infantry, it is Ferguson rifle, for cavalry it is the cavalry pistol and for artillery, it is the gunpowder (not sure about the name)
For other items, buy the snare drum, which is = mass fire, Which means that your generals deal more or less the same damage when in full health or low health. Tents are not recommended as they only replenish 6 health when the general is not in the city. Same goes to the flags.
Napoleanic code is good and so is the crown. For temporary items, you need a 5 star business trader who can sell back the items for the same price. For this, use Alexander I in the battle of Austerlitz in the coalition campaign. Find a way to take Vienna and post Alexander I there. He is a 5 star general and he can be used to sell these items. In this way, you can buy the temporary items and sell them for the same price when you get better items.
For movement, tall boots is available for infantry, quality saddle for cavalry and horse artillery for artillery. All of them give +2 movement. For maximum effect, switch items between generals. Example for Golitsyn, when he moves, give him the quality saddle and when he attacks, give him the cavalry pistol. You can even get Warhorse for cavalry. They give you extra movement, which is very valuable for a Princess rush for Lan and Victoria. You can do with the +1 movement items and can get rid of them once you get the better items by selling them in Vienna.

3. Don't upgrade your armies in campaigns.
I know that it might be tempting to upgrade your armies in campaigns. "After Unlock, every extra level adds one chevron (+2 defense) to every unit you build, during this campaign. (The starting troops remain equal)" says ππ³π°π΅π΄π¬πΊ but instead, you can sell those campaign stars for medals. Another reason it is not recommended is that it is an upgrade only for that particular campaign. Also, for every campaign star, you get 3 medals. If you have a 5 star business general, you can get 4 medals per star. So, you get
420 x 4 = 1680 medals.
If possible, don't skip the A.I turn as you will lose the medals for the counterattack. You can instead of improving your armies, can improve the general or princess by buying items and setting up training grounds to train your generals. The best grinding grounds can be to starve of your allies untill they go into confusion and can use your generals to destroy them. But don't occupy cities or they will not have enough resources to spam units.
To those who don't know how to upgrade or unlock units in campaign, first click on the particular campaign. There, you can see that on the top an upgrade button. Click on that. Now, there will be 5 rows on the top -
1. Infantry
2. Cavalry
3. Artillery
4. Forts
5. Ships
Example, if I want to unlock machine gun, click on the infantry button, click on the last column. There, on the right side, the unlock option will be visible. Also, if the unit is already unlocked, then the upgrade option will be displayed. For every level you upgrade, the number of stars needed increase. In a game where medals are valuable, this is not the proper place to invest.

4. Don't Upgrade your generals with medals.
As already said, in a game where medals are valuable, this is also not the proper place to invest them. You need lot of items - movement items, attack items, armored carrier (nullifies the effect the sea does to land troops when fighting on the sea), med packs, trainers, nobility items, Napoleonic code...
It takes almost 3600 medals to upgrade just one general to 150/10 Rank/Nobility, which is huge amount. Unless you are planning to spend money to buy medals, it is HIGHLY not recommended. There are many guides which provide many innovative ways to grind for Nobility and one of which I described above. You can even setup training grounds in conquest.

5. Get the locked units IF necessary.
Unlocking locked units consumes campaign stars, which can be used to get medals. However, if you buy the heavyweight generals like Suvorov or Lannes using emblems or just Dobeln using medals, I do not still recommend to unlock the machine gun to one level as they clear of the hordes of enemy pretty easily with guards as well. But you can unlock them. Ditto for cavalry generals. armored car is not necessary. Guards cavalry or even heavy cavalry will do fine for Lan or Dombrowski. Equip them with Cavalry Pistol and they can deal high damage. As littlecorporal points out that high damage is not the most important part of the game. There is no use if Lan on double armoured car equipped with 1 or 2 cavalry pistols deals 100 damage to militia. A lot of damage would be wasted. Hence, I don't think they are necessary.
