Prussia begins 1798 similarly to how they would begin another conflict 116 years later; trapped between powerful adversaries. This guide will lead you to quick victory.
First Impressions
While none of the generals excel, they are all at least serviceable: L'Estocq with 3 cav stars and 3 movement on dbl heavy cav, Wilhem II who has 254 hp on dbl guard cavalry and defense art, and Ferdinand 3 stars inf and inf tactics on triple guards.
We have four available slots to use generals. The same strategy can be used with or without using generals, though it will take longer. Likewise for tavern generals; they can be replaced by spamming more regular units.
Of the starting units, only the dbl heavy artillery caught my eye. It's perfect for your top artillery general if you one.
Part 1: First Warsaw, then the World
Commander, how many Polish generals does it take to lose a campaign? Two, one to sit on his horse in Krakow and one to sit on his *Auto corrected* in Warsaw. As the eye of Europe turns to France, now is the perfect time to partition the weak Polish state and strengthen the great Prussian one!
Objective: Seize all Polish facilities before allies.
Strategy: HRE provides enough of a buffer that France is not an early direct threat. Poland on the other hand can be. Dombrowski will alternatively strike for Berlin or Vienna if not attacked. Poniatowski becomes available early in the tavern at Warsaw as well. Even if you don't want to add him, you must keep Poland from adding him as well.
Move all units south from Danzig and east from Berlin to attack Poland. Leave Estonian light infantry in reserve until ready to attack Warsaw, then use it to flank. Leave the lone dbl heavy artillery and Warsaw forts alone as the Russians will attack them. If you plan to use Poniatowski, build a cavalry unit as soon as you take Dambrowski's stable.
Part II: The French Offensive
Commander, the fires of the revolution are spreading across Europe! The French have exiled nobles, beheaded the king and are threatening to one day give women the vote! They must be stopped before our society is ruined.
Objective: Halt the French advance and seize the heart of France.
Strategy: I am of the firm belief that the tavern at Wellburg is the key to a quick 1798 conquest. It's location right on the front and the early availability of two cav generals, Archduke J and Bubna, means that if you can capture it early enough, the two of them can push into Spain by round 20 or so, basically ensuring a round 40 victory.
Prussia's biggest drawback in 1798 is a weak economy. Even with Berlin, Prussia starts with an 83/13 economy. If you are using HQ generals, it will take some time to save for units. If you are spamming units instead, first build up Danzig before building units. Either way your targets should be the same, shore up the HRE defenses along the Rhine, if possible seize Wellburg and add tavern generals. I prefer dble heavy cav as movement is most useful in 1798.
Once Poland falls, have Ferdinand come back to lead the offensive. If you have a general on the dbl heavy artillery, also have it come back to seize France. This is the major battle of the war; after you secure the east bank of the Rhine, you cross into France, Dumouriez, Moreau, and Claude have to be defeated before Massena in Paris. The quicker you move, the easier; especially if you coordinate with the many suicidal invasions the English attempt. But really, don't hold anything back. Put as many HQ generals and tavern generals into the fray as you can.
Part III: Berlin to Baghdad Railroad
Commander, most humoursly the Czar has referred to the Ottoman Empire as the "Sick Man" of Europe. The King has agreed to aid the Czars attack on the Ottomans. Be aggressive and be careful, I do not trust our Russian allies.
Objective: Seize Istanbul before the Russians and defeat the Ottoman Empire
Strategy: After Warsaw falls, L'Estocq heads south to the Ottoman Empire. Putting Poniatowski on dbl light cav (4 move, all hexes) is fun and useful. Once in Ottoman lands, L'Estocq should follow standard operating procedure and seize a base from which to spam units for the attack. The big bonus to elimnating Poland early is that Russia will instead mount a vigorous offensive towards Istanbul. Your strategy is to aid and profit from that offensive. L'Estocq should head towards Istanbul, after seizing it invade anatolia and spam units from Istanbul to seize Greece and the Balkans.
Part IV: Damn Danes
Commander, the general staff is worried that if the King takes the field against the French, disaster will surely strike. Is there a safer, less threatening theater of war we could send him to instead?
Objective: Seize Copenhagen then rest of Denmark.
Strategy: I hope at least one reader has gotten this far and is smugly wondering how good of a guide this could be after forgetting all about the Baltic fleet. Never fear boo, I got you. Firstly, ships are expensive so your main target is preserving your fleet. If possible, try to limit attacks. With that in mind, bring your frigate and privateer right outside Copenhagen and wait for Ushakov. Use your coastal fort to attack the Danish battleship. Once Ushakov arrives, flank Copenhagen while Ushakov and Fischer duel it out.
Once Warsaw falls, bring Wilhelm to Copenhagen. Take Copenhagen, Kiel, Christiana and rest of Denmark. Use Wilhelm to attack coastal forts before bringing in your navy.
Part V: Penninsular Prussians
Commander, bad news. The king has picked you to lead the offensive into Spain. We at headquarters know how deeply you will miss our cold weather, frozen beaches, and strong women. Please, be strong for the nation.
Objective: From central France, push out to Amsterdam, Rome, Sardinia, and Madrid.
Strategy: While your main force takes Paris, you also want to be concentrating on the spine of the blue team in 1798: it's the series of facilities running from Wellburg, to Lyon, to Marseille, to Barcelona, to Madrid. Since your 3 generals are occupied in Denmark, Ottoman, and Paris, adding Bubna can make a big difference. As your lead units push south to Madrid, spam units east and west to seize southern France and Italy.
Once Paris falls, split your forces to aid the British assault on Amsterdam and Northern France. Junot is available in Paris, as is Kollowrat in Wellburg. Since both need a unit from another facility (cav for Junot, artillery for Kollowrat) they require some coordination to be effective. Once Madrid falls, finish the conquest of Spain.
Part VI: The Cherry on Top
Commander, did you actually forget about Napolean? You understand these are the Napoleanic Wars right? We already ordered 4 pizzas for our victory party and we just got word Napolean has blown 3 privateers to splinters in Naples. Please, tell me you have a plan!
Objective: Kill Napolean
Strategy; By the strange luck of fortune, Napolean ends up in the final blind spot of our conquest, southern Italy. By this time Napolean will be a starred unit, that and his 10 nobility make him a tough out. The preferred way to deal with him is to send Lan on a double Armored Car down from Milan and Rome. If that's not an option, try plan B. Your units coming from Istanbul can help. Balabio and Napolean are much more vulnerable on boats. If you can seize the Albanian port, surround them with spammed privateers. Otherwise, try to surround on land.
