Being a member of the House of Bourbon, Ferdinand IV was a natural opponent of the French Revolution and Napoleon. On 29 November 1798, he effectively started the War of the Second Coalition by briefly occupying Rome, but was expelled from it by French Revolutionary forces within the year and safely returned home.
1798 Naples is a unique 2 star nation with a path to a quick and satisfying victory. This guide will show you how.
First Impressions
Not much. I played 5 rounds before realizing that Sicily and its double light infantry were mine. But that was a clue, and on my restart Naples' unique advantage was apparent: a light cavalry, a privateer, a heavy artillery, and a dbl light infantry; Lan, Victoria, Isabella, Sakurako.
My feelings on this are as follows: 2 star countries are hard without strong generals, but enormous fun with them. Your generals are handicapped by starting on inferior units or waiting a long time for the economy to build. If you don't have a strong team, you are better off working on the campaigns. They are vastly more rewarding in terms of medals and advancement to get the aforementioned Princesses.
The case in point, Naples. Right at the beginning you can bring your 4 generals into play on suitable unit types. Lan on a single light cav and Victoria on a privateer are just not OP enough that you can't foolishly attack. Still, with their speed a ≈40 round victory is possible.
Overall Strategy
Looking at the map, and from previous experience on 1798, a few things are apparent:
- Napolean's attack on Sardinia is the inmediate threat, we can't afford to let him get more chevrons.
-Denmark and Ottoman Anatolia are the most distant foes. Once Poland falls in R25, Prussia will turn it's attention North and Russia South, providing us reinforcements.
- We must quickly advance to Wellburg to get the tavern and win the war between there and Paris.
Since spammed units play such a small role in this conquest, I will instead describe it by general.
Victoria's Path
Victoria used double propellars and double tents throughout her conquest.
Rounds 1-10
Attack Napolean ASAP, flanking when possible. If Cagliari's fall is imminent, attack Napolean's accompanying unit, it takes two units to occupy. Once Sardinia is saved, attack Corsica with Nunziante. Build 2 privateers near Rome after Nunziante occupies port.
Rounds 10-20
With Nunziante, attack Marseille area, capture stable, port, and factory.
Rounds 20-30
With Nunziante, attack and capture port and factory at Barcelona. Destroy offshore fort.
Rounds 30-40
Proceed to Cadiz with Nunziante, attacking Spanish along the way.
Isabella's Path
Isabella used double horse artillery and +6 powder throughout her conquest.
Rounds 1-40
Play with a strong artillery general is vastly different than a weak one. Strong ones seek out artillery fire as defensive volleys are the only way to get multiple attacks each round. In that spirit, the ideal placement for Isabella is alone within range of forts and artillery so she gets multiple return fire chances during the AI's turn.
Because of blue team's geography and Isabella's strength against forts, she basically circumscribes the same path for every red team. In this one she goes Rome, Milan and large Italian fort, Zurich, Claude's fort, Paris, Clermont, southern french fort, Zaragoza, Madrid, Spanish large fort, Seville, Cadiz, with attention paid to the small and medium french forts and generals encountered enroute. In this list, there are 13 targets, meaning average time should be rounds per target. Use other units to occupy.
Sakurako's Path
Sakurako used double tall boots and +6 Fergusson rifles throughout this conquest.
Rounds 1-10
Sakurako's first challenge is getting to the mainland. After she arrives, quickly move her up the conquest. Clean-up any Italian units left behind as Isabella and Lan raced up the coast.
Rounds 10-20
Control area between Marseille and Wellburg. Aid other generals in attacks, using quick movement to get between fronts. Toggle move items and set up between multiple empty villages. Once Isabella begins Paris assault, move north to aid her.
Rounds 20-30
Control southern France and advance into Spain. Isabella will be pushing south from Paris while Nunziante and Victoria push in from Barcelona. Capture Zaragoza and then take Madrid.
Rounds 30-40
Suppress remaning Spanish forces, attack Cadiz.
Lan's Path
Lan used a warhorse, saddle, and double +6 cav pistols throughout this conquest.
Rounds 1-15
Lan, Isabella, and Nunziante attack Balabio in Rome and adjacent artillery. Try to get Nunziante to occupy Rome because:
War broke out between the Kingdom of Naples and the French Republic, Nunziante participated in the first occupation of Rome by the Neapolitans.
I've said it before in other conquest guides, but it bears repeating. The tavern in Wellburg makes a big difference, so as soon as Rome falls, Lan needs to keep an eye on what is going on there. Ideally, the French seize it early and Lan can race up and attack before Archduke J and Bubna become available in R8 and R10 respectively.
If Wellburg is well defended by the HRE, plan B is to help Isabella take Paris quickly. Either way, the plan is the same, add a tavern general to a double heavy cavalry and send them north to Denmark, while Lan runs across Europe to Belgrade.
Archduke J, Bubna, Junot are all useful on dbl light or heavy cav. Their low movement makes the AC and guard cavalry to slow.
Rounds 15-30
Lan moves into the Ottoman Empire starting with Belgrade before the Macedonian factory and Bulgarian stable. Spam guards from Belgrade to take out border forts, guard cavalry and single light artillery to take Athens. Send supporting forces via ship from Naples to aid Lan. If no coastal fort in southern Greece, send privateers to attack southern Ottoman port.
Rounds 30-40
Lan attacks Istanbul. Try to seize neighboring stable or factory to spam flanking units. Cross Bosphorus. Conquest Anatolia. Quickly move to port after obtaining facilities. Bring forces from Greece or near Istanbul to help.
Tavern General Paths
I added 4, Archduke J, Bubna, Junot, Kollowrat. As usual, most tavern generals are a waste of medals. To wit; Junot seized Bordeaux and the N. Spanish port, Kollowrat was promptly attacked to near 0 health by Desaix and a nonfactor through the rest of the game, and Bubna accompanied Lan where he delivered 2 hits to Selim in Istanbul.
Archduke J however, was a star. Critically, after leaving Wellburg he captured the port near Amsterdam. With 3 spammed privateers, he captured first the factory then all other facilities in N. Denmark, before moving south to Copenhagen, which fell first to Prussians.
Economic Path
Since this path is heavily reliant on a few powerful generals, the weak economy isn't so important. In later rounds when all fronts require spammed support, the economy should be strong enough. Lan can do a late game trade in Istanbul. Isabella can also be rushed back to Bordeaux rather than attack Cadiz to manage late game economy for higher scores. Following this strategy my final score was 42 rounds with 3500 iron and full stock food and gold.
