Denmark starts 1798 in dire straits; surrounded by enemied, under attack, and only a single general. Whether playing with a crack team or without generals, this guide will lead you to victory.
Overall Strategy
Denmark's unique geography makes it one of the more challenging conquest countries. It's forces are divided by the Baltic and unable to support each other. Denmark conquests play out as country by country campaigns, more so than almost any other. The major front of Prussia and HRE play out together, but the conquests of Sweden, GB, Russia, Portugal, and Sicily are carried out by forces acting independently. Save before you end each turn in case you forget to move a unit.
Throughout the 18th century, the Danish economy did very well, largely on the basis of expanded agricultural output to meet growing demand across Europe. Danish merchant ships also traded around Europe and the North Atlantic, venturing to new Danish colonies in the Caribbean and North Atlantic.
Denmark's biggest advantage is it's strong economy. For example, 4 star Sweden produces about half. In early rounds, invest as much as possible in getting your 4 starting towns up to level 6 and tgen you will have a strong base for further expansion. You will need to spam units all over the map, so a strong economy is a must.
General Placement
Isabella dbl heavy artillery near Christiana.
Sakurako on adjacent double light cavalary.
Lan dble heavy cavalry.
Victoria southern triple grenadier.
As a 3 star country, Denmark is allowed 5 generals. The battleship is a good choice if you have a naval general.
Part I. Danish- Swedish War
R1-8 w/ generals R1/-15 without
Commander, strong Swedish forces are massed along the border in Norway. They are promising our peasants a similar form of healthcare and social services, albeit with slightly less free trade. We must stop them and spread the free market.
Defeating Dobeln requires patience. Your plan is to use your grenadiers, fort, and cavalry to flank him, while attacking with your artillery. Bring the frigate in Bergen towards Goteberg. After helping Fischer destroy Hotze, send the battleship up as well. Since Dobeln has mass fire, only use ranged attacks and the fort.
As you engage Dobeln, threaten Swedish facilities. Sweden wont be able to buy many units to defend, especially if you target Goteburg and Stockholm first. You can ignore the port in Karlskrona for now.
Part II: Danish Rhine
R1-8 with generals R1-15 without
Commander, intelligence reports that French and Dutch forces are planning a sneak attack against HRE forces along the Rhine. Are you thinking what I am thinking? Sandwiches? I was thinking we could invade from the North and capture their cities. We could then bring sandwiches to eat when we get there.
From afar, 1798 always plays out with Fischer blowing away from Copenhagen. Instead, you want to bring him cross the sea to attack Holtze then Wilhelm. Use the Battleship as well, avoiding the Prussian coastal cannon. If the Prussian navy attacks, have your battleship move towards your own fort.
Fischer, the heavy cav, and grenadier target all facilities along the Rhine from Oldenburg to Munich. The diamond is of course Wellburg. If you can get Wellburg early, you can save a lot of rounds on your conquest by dispatching Archduke J to Lisbon, Bubna to Clujnapocoa, and Kollowrat to Palermo.
Unfortunately, there is no way to get it for sure. In fact, it's much more likely for France to get it and unwittingly add 10 rounds to the war. From this, we get another useful insight into the game and one which Napolean was famous for: Luck matters. It took 4 or 5 tries before I hit the 'perfect' run of 1798 tavern generals: Archduke J, Bubna, Mercer, Poniatowski, Yorke, and Kollowrat to get a 41 round 9999/7000/9999 victory. It required a lot of luck throughout.
Part III: Expeditionary Forces
R8-20 with generals 15-30 without
Commander, we have defended our borders and obtained a defensible position. To continue fighting requires several ill advised individual invasions which require intense planning and logistical support with little chance of success.
Denmark, Sweden and the Rhine territories give you a strong economic base to begin your end game. From the Bergen area send a force to invade Scotland. From your southernmost base, send units to Portugal and Sicily/ Palermo. From Stockholm, send units towards St. Petersburg.
Playing with the princesses and tavern generals, I sent Sakurako on dbl light cav to GB on round 2, Archduke J on dble heavy cav to Portugal R9, Isabella to Russia from Stockholm R9, Kollowrat to Palermo R20 (about 5 rounds late).
Without generals, from Bergen I sent 2 dble guards, 1 dbl light art, the frigate and battleship to Scotland, a dble heavy cav from Wellburg to Portugal, a dble guard cav to Palermo, 2 dbl guards and a dbl light art to Russia.
It's important to pay attention to how your allies are doing; if Napolean and the Spanish are doing poorly, you may need more units.
Part IV: The Central European Diamond
w/ R10-30, without R20-40
Commander, enemy and allied forces are coming in from all directions. In some places there isn't anywhere to stand. Also, Poland called, they need help.
The key to winning 1798 is controlling the diamond in the middle if Europe with corners at Wellburg, Berlin, Warsaw, and Vienna. You want to control all of the HRE villages between Wellburg and Brunn, then begin attacking Berlin and Vienna. You should have some ally support. Before R15, you will be able to save Poland. The later you come, the more likely to face a long front from Berlin to Vienna.
Part V: Country Conquest and Mop Up
R20-40 w/ 40-60+ w/ out
Commander, we have reports coming in from all sectors and requisition requests for all equipment. Our factories and cities are producing all they can but it never seems enough. Don't forget to answer all requests for orders. You forgot about the forces in Portugal last turn.
The final rounds will be spent completing individual country conquests.
Great Britain- beginning from Scotland sweep south and from Liverpool factory, spam light artillery to bomb Rowland and invade Ireland. Sakurako can get Mercer in R15 on dbl light artillery to speed it up. Use your fleet to harass the English marine units and aid French invasion.
Portugal- steal a Spanish facility and aim for the factory south of Porto. Then spam light artillery to take Porto then Lisbon.
Sicily- from Munich area, send troops to aide Napolean in Naples. Get a port and facility and invade Siciliy, you may need to target Nelson.
HRE- Take Rhine area, cities north of the Danube, Vienna, Budapest, Lvov, then Cjunapoca.
Prussia- after taking Berlin and Warsaw, perform pincer movement on remaining troops near Danzig.
Russia- Have Stockholm units invade Riga, facilities near St. Petersburg, then continue south while spammed units attack Moscow. German units push in from Poland and take Minsk, Vilnius, Kiev. All units push to Black Sea port.
With 4 full powered generals using taverns a 41 round or shorter conquest is possible. Without generals, less than 60 rounds is difficult.
