Top 5 1798 Conquests to Try
France The first and last conquest to try, nothing epitomizes the game more than France in 1798. Great generals, great geography, and great unit placement make this a near perfect candidate.
Holy Roman Empire Long considered the only viable path to getting Victoria, HRE has a well documented path to a 32 round victory. But even for fun, there is a lot to like here. Central location, two taverns, and a varied team make this a must try.
Poland Surrounded by enemies but holding some of the best generals in the game, Poland is for players in love with good cavalry generals. The first few rounds are intense defense, the last require a blitzkrieg offense.
Portugal Following one path out of Portugal and then only two past Lyon, Portugal offers the best candidate for players who like having their team work together. Perfect for team training.
Great Britain Requiring a near perfect series of precise movements for a satisfying victory, this conquest requires frustrating restarts like no other. One of the more challenging conquests in the game.
The Basics
1798 replicates not only the events surrounding Napoleonβs rise to power but also the partitioning of Poland which happened several years prior and some partly fictional conflicts that took place during the general time period. The Blue team is led by France, the Red team by Great Britain, the Holy Roman Empire, and Russia.
The Map
The Map is dominated by the Holy Roman Empire, Prussia, and Russia in the East vs. France in the West. Poland is surrounded by hostile powers. The Scandinavian,Iberian, and Italian peninsulas are divided between warring nations. Great Britain and the Ottoman Empire dominate from their respective corners.
In general, the Red Team offers the easier path to victory. Planning the naval assault vs. Great Britain, invading the vastness of Russia, and defeating inconveniently place Portugal require time and patience. By comparison, crossing the Bosporus to conquer Anatolia is a piece of cake.
The Conflicts
True to history, 1798 is mostly a collection of local wars. The key to a good conquest is aiding your allies at crucial times and helping them to secure a quick victory. This frees your forces to concentrate on other threats.
The Partition of Poland The largest conflict of 1798. It begins with LβEstocqβs attack on Posnan before Del Roy, Raevsky, Suvorov, Rosenberg, and Saltykov eventually join in. The conflict has major implications for the rest of the game. A quick Blue victory opens up the easy conquest of most of the Redβs strength. If Red wins early, the remaining powers will turn their strength outwards and be that much stronger vs. the Ottomans, Italians, and Danes.
The British and French Invasions Massive amounts of troops and generals move across the channel but it usually results in a stalemate without your intervention. Powerful infantry generals in both capitals prevent an easy victory. Taking London or Paris frees unleashes your AI ally to help you finish the conquest of a powerful adversary. Britain usually has more success invading the Netherlands.
French Attack the Rhine Dumouriez is usually initially successful but stalls without support from Moreau, Desaix, and Marmont. Marmont and Desaix have very unpredictable paths. Keeping an eye on the two of them in the early rounds is an important predictor for which conflicts in later rounds will require more help.
Ottoman Border War The Ottomanβs make an early push to capture Buda Pest and Vienna whereas HRE and Russia make a late push towards Istanbul. Both attempts generally fail without your help.
Denmark Under Attack A strong early push by Sweden, attacks by Ushakov on Copenhagen in the middle, and a late Prussian attack, generally seal Denmarkβs fate.Similar to Poland, Denmarkβs early defeat or saving changes the behaviour of all adversaries. Itβs less than central location usually make it an after thought until later rounds.
The Mediterranean Napoleon and Nelson, the two most powerful generals in the conquest bookend this exotic front. Tiny Sardinia and Sicily must fend off Napoleon. A dormant Italy stands by and waits until the final attack to throw her might in.
Spain vs. Portugal Isolated from the rest of the map, Spain and Portugal engage in a seesaw struggle. Watch in helpless horror from across the map as your ally fails to capitalize on its victories or operate with any semblance of strategy. A slight advantage for Spain to win in Round 40+.
The Taverns
There are 8 different taverns spread across the map. The earliest generals start becoming available in round 8 with half becoming available up until round 20. After which the amount and availability of generals severely drops off, with the final general (Gobedski in Warsaw) not becoming available until round 66.
Since the area between the Rhine and Poland is the largest battlefield of intense conflict, controlling the trio of taverns located around it in Wellburg, Berlin ,and Warsaw is vital. Tavern generals can be a big help speeding up your own conquest. Also, if added by enemy countries, they will add time to your own victory. Even if you donβt use them, it is important to capture the taverns.
Capturing Wellburg early can be the key to a quick victory for most nations. Archduke J and Bubna are both available before R10. They both have cavalry stars and Wellburg is a stable. Having two extra cavalry generals make conquests so much easier because they can reliably capture facilities independently. Kollowrat has 2 artillery stars and geography. Adding him to a double light artillery in round 20 helps vs. all the forts in the area.
Great Britain (Sidney, Mercer) and France (Junot, McDonald) start with taverns in their possession. Since the fronts can potentially be far away when they become available, using them requires some preparation to get the right unit available and planning to leave them plenty of enemies to attack after adding them.
Poniatowski in Warsaw and Yorck in Berlin are too potentially useful allies. Poniatowski is available from round 9 but Poland seldom adds him right away. Getting him can be tricky for either side as the Blue team as to wait for the Red to capture Warsaw first and the Red team will be competing with allies. Poniatowski on a double guard cavalry or armored carrier is a big help, but you need to bring the unit over first. Yorck can be useful on cavalry (2 stars) but better on infantry (3 stars and Infantry Tactics). Depending on where your front is, Yorck can be useful on triple light infantry (3 move) or triple guards.
Conquest Countries
The Blue Team
5 Star
France With 7 great generals (and Claude uselessly on a fort) France is the protagonist of 1798. The generals are conveniently placed, making the beginning movements easy and less specific. Obvious starting units for your generals is also a plus. The tavern in Paris can add useful generals to help conquer Britain and capturing Wellburg allows the same on the German front. The only downside is the long march to Russia and lack of a good economic general. France offers a possible path to Victoria.
Ottoman Compared with other 5 star countries, there is much less to like with the Ottomans. Two very average generals are a greater disadvantage than whatever the benefits geography and superior units might have to offer. Lack of tavern generals is the final strike the Ottomans making it a difficult and boring conquest.
4 Star
Poland A few things work in Polandβs favor to make it one of the best countries to play. Geography means you will be fighting from the get go and that the enemy will come to you. Poland starts with a great cavalry general in Dombrowski and a great infantry one in Kosciuszko. Adding Poniatowski early gives you another great general. Finally, except for cavalry, Poland starts with great units perfect for your artillery and infantry generals.
Spain Spain also starts with only two land generals but they are two of the weakest on the board. Huarte is decent as a naval general, ut his placement makes him difficult to effectively use throughout the conquest. Spain benefits from isolation but its also a curse. You will struggle to influence other conflicts in there crucial stages. Too late and Denmark and Poland will fall making a Spanish conquest a potential long slog.
3 Star
Italy If not for Balabio in Rome, Italy would have one of the weakest economies. Klenau will make an early attack. Italyβs biggest advantage is that after Klenau attacks, they are mostly ignored. Italy starts with 3 good units allowing a quick strike up to Vienna that is the key to victory.
Denmark Surrounded by enemies and under attack, Denmark must rely on a strong economy if it hopes to survive. Itβs central position requires a unique conquest strategy.
Nederlanden Like Italy, the Nederlandenβs biggest strength is a level vii city. Bylandt is a very average general. Nederlanden will be under assault early but should be able to defend itself. Conquering other countres is an entirely different matter.
The Red Team
5 Star
Great Britain Starts in a unique position with forces spread across the map. No other country requires such a precise series of exact movements. You will restart again and again as you try to figure out the exact movements Nelson needs to make to capture the Albanian port, defeat the frigate, open up the factory for the invading infantry and still get to Naples in time to prevent Napoleon landing. Ditto for the invasions of Denmark and South France, and the rescue of the Rhine. A possible but difficult path to Victoria.
Russia Five great generals and Alexander in Moscow make this a fun conquests. Suvorov and Ushakov have 5 stars, everyone else at least 3. A clear path contributes to an enjoyable conquest. The main barrier to a high score is the distance to Cadiz.
Holy Roman Empire 1000 years ago, before Trotski cracked the code on getting Victoria, HRE 1798 was known as the only viable path to getting Victoria. Now there are many more paths available, though this will likely remain the most popular. No other country offers as much opportunity for a quick finish. Denmark, Poland, and Nederlanden can mostly be ignored as they will fall to your allies, leaving only invasions of bordering France, Italy and Ottoman. 8 generals are immediately available, and 2 more quickly added in Wellburg. Outside of the excellent Archduke Charles in Vienna, the remainder are firmly βaverageβ but their numbers and versatility are a big advantage. Use them wisely to attack appropriate targets. Add your own generals to conquer distant Spain and Anatolia early enough to get a big bonus to your score.
4 Star
Prussia Prussia enjoys some of the advantages of the HRE but with only 3 generals to capitalize on them. Defeating Poland early frees up the Russians to attack the Ottomans and the HRE to fight Italy and France. You will still need to cross friendly territories to defeat them. Try to attack Paris at the same time as one of Britainβs periodic invasions.
Sweden The Poland of the Red team, Sweden starts with only the OP Dobeln but with several good candidates for your generals. Well protected flanks make Sweden a relatively uncomplicated conquest as first as your only goal is to defeat Denmark. After Denmark falls you will have a long march to Cadiz and the southern port in Anatolia.
3 Star
Portugal Starting from the corner with 4 good units for your generals, Portugal offers a clear conquest path- through Spain to the Marseilles, Lyon, Bordeaux region and then split towards Paris and Bergen and Milan, Istanbul, and Anatolia. Beresford is above average help. Portugalβs path doesnβt synch with many tavern generals, meaning you are likely to have serious fighting throughout the conquest. Density of opponents and a single front make this a great conquest to grind up your HQ teamβs rank and nobility.
2 Star
Naples As an ally, Naples resolutely refuses to do anything, usually falling to Napoleon and the Italians. As a PC, Naples can lead the red team to a quick victory with the right team of generals.
Sardinia Only the true addicts try to play Sardinia because it is one of the harder conquests in the game. Terrible geography, units, and economy are just the start as Napoleon and often Marmont attack aggressively starting in round 2. If you are the kind of player that loves patiently bringing Amadeo over to Ajaccio so that he can use his architecture skill to boost your economy up enough to buy a militia every turn, Sardinia is the conquest country for you.
Final Thoughts
Starting generals, geography, strength of available starting units to place HQ generals, economy, and path to tavern generals are the 5 most important factors to consider when choosing conquest countries. Hopefully this guide will help you to make your next conquest a great one.
