Pick the best generals you can get your hands on,push hard in the conquest mode to win free princess but at some point the campaigns can become realy difficult anyways, the game is basically hinting that your generals need to be upgraded in rank/nobility and need to have the best items (see grinding guide).
In the campaign mode at every chance you get, make sure to :
1. Outnumber the strong enemy generals in a fight.
2. Lower their moral it decreases both their offense and their defense.This is often critical.
3. Artillery is key to many battles,attacking without getting damaged in return helps a lot.
4. Take over your allies cities/farms/factories if it makes sense to do so as sometimes this really can make a difference.
5. Certain items can be critical in some/many missions .For example the snare drum.
