So, this is by far the biggest damage check / skill check mission in the game in my opinion, this is also one of my favorite missions in the game alongside Allies Coral Sea.
I replayed this a few times as well with different generals via cloud-saving to ensure that it wasn't -SO- luck dependent. It isn't.
I'd put this mission difficulty level at 4.5/5
Firstly, my tech level from these screenshots are at 5-6-4-2-1. I completed this at lower tech, don't remember what, possibly 3-6-4-2-1? but I did have 6 in tanks and that part is kinda important. I also felt more comfortable writing this guide compared to a Coral Sea one as the screenshots I provide here will be more relevant as by the time you get here, your tech level should be somewhat similar. A 2nd side-note is that the screenshots are from 2 different runs as during the run where I was making the guide, I did not play the start optimally. I will point out my mistakes but I also redid the first turn to show you the optimal first turn.
Generals I used : Vatutin, Vasilevsky, Govorov, Timoshenko, Chuikov, Halsey.
Important Special Forces used: KV6 (Max), Katyusha (Max), Cossack Calvary (Max), T28 (unranked), M12 (unranked)
Other Special Forces which you don't really need to use: Sexton (unranked), KV2 (IV)(I used this when the game was already won just because why not)
Anyways without further ado,
I only used 3 Generals to start. I'll try and rank the alternatives where you should put each one.
As shown Vatutin is on the KV6, I'd probably put Vatutin, Roko, Monty, Patton on it in that order after having played through all of them. His first turn should allow you to kill off the infantry and the arty next to the rader.
I put Vasilevsky on the Cossack but I think the Suwalska is ok here as well. You want whichever Assault Special Force that has the highest HP & Movement. In terms of Generals, MacArthur should work, I didn't actually try him and I guess any of the Tier 2 generals (Tassin, Slim, Bradly, Clark) should also work. In my playthrough, I actually forgot to recruit another infantry so he only has 3 stacks but you should give him a 4th stack. Try and put your best defensive general/city general who won't die. This part helps a lot.
Lastly and most importantly, Govorov is on the Katyusha. I think this part is a requirement and if you don't have this, you probably just can't do enough damage quickly enough.
The last key unit for the first turn is the Arty. By moving it to shoot the unit on the city, you can drag away the units on the city allowing you to capture it on the next turn.
SideNote: I did put Patton on a Medium Tank in one playthrough and he did ok as well. I am just bad with Medium Tanks but that is viable.
This should be how the 2nd turn looks like, its from 2 different runs but you get the point. The goal is to get the coastal city.
Your next objective is to get your main Damage Dealers (in this case Vatutin on the KV6 and Govorov on the Katyusha) to start hitting Mandalay. If you lose either you fail but you should be able to position them where I put them and they will survive. I would also use the Infantry (see Vasilevsky) to capture Mandalay and the reason you want your most defensive general is he is going to get attacked from all sides by the AI. During this period, you can also call another reinforcement Heavy Tank, I put Timoshenko on him with the T28 on him.
Sidenote: The earliest I took Mandalay in these runs was Turn 5, but Vatutin will always usually get it by turn 6 because he one-shots, with the other 3 generals you need a bit more luck but turn 6 and definitely turn 7 is doable. Also, I made a mistake by letting the Japs capture the costal town, you shouldn't let that happen.
The 24 units killed shouldn't be a problem, your next objective then is to move your units down towards Kuribayashi. Again, get your main DPS to hit Kuribayashi. KV6, T28, Katyusha. At this point, I also recruited Chuikov on the M12 who will be important and Halsey on the Aircraft Carrier who is not really necessary, I just did it for style points really since on this map it rains so often.
Note: I sacrificed Slim here and put an Engineer/Radar just so you could see the overwhelming enemy forces. Don't do this, just put him on something sensible and try and keep him alive. Your main objective here and the 2nd key moment after capturing Mandalay is to kill Kuribayashi and retreat. If your KV6 and Katyusha and your main Infantry General are alive, you're in great shape.
At this point, your job is to take favorable fights with your KV6, Katyusha, T28 and M12. At some point apparently I also got a reinforcement Arty which I added a Sexton too, I guess every bit of damage helps. Halsey was also bombing the Arty and Heavy Artys. Remember, a Bomber+Fighter is more damage than a Strategic Bomber. But he was totally not needed.
Once its clear that you have the advantage, in this case Turn 15 but usually if you don't have a Vatutin maybe 16-17, you can start splitting your army and chasing down enemies. This screenshot is just to show the rain.
Cleanup on Aisle 5. Photo-Session with all 6 generals. Sidenote: Apparently I also put a KV2 on a Medium Tank during this period of time. I guess you can do that as well.
TL;DR Key Points: There are 2 critical phases in this mission. Capturing Mandalay with all your main generals intact and defeating Kuribayashi with all your main generals intact. That's pretty much it.
If you want to see a general on a Medium Tank version, go watch Sevada on youtube. That's an alternative walkthrough. I didn't use any Air Force through the mission, he used a bunch. Both ways work.
Finally, If anyone wants a similar step-by-step guide to any other 44 or 45 AILLED mission, I'd probably be happy to do it. I just don't think with my tech level a screenshotted step-by-step guide would be applicable for the first 4 campaigns.
