I personally think this mission and Marching to Italy are the two hardest missions for 1944 to perfect clear.
I'd put this mission difficulty level at 4/5.
Also, my tech level from these screenshots are at 5-6-4-2-1 because I replayed it to get screenshots but I perfectly cleared this at a much lower tech so you should be fine. Also I went and semi-watched Huynh and Sevada to see how they did it but I think they make the mission a lot harder than it needs to be. Lastly, I only did this once and messed up quite a few things but I'll also point it out.
The Key to this mission (and I think most missions) is to get your units to attack an objective you want together.
Generals I used : Vatutin, Vasilevsky, Govorov, LeClrec, Clark, Halsey
Important Special Forces used: KV6 (Max), Katyusha (Max), Cossack Calvary (Max), NKVD (II), KV2 (IV), Sexton (unranked)
**Sidenote: I Don't think you need to Max them for this mission, its not a damage race, I just listed what is in the screenshots. I also mis-used Irish Guards (unranked).**
Without further ado,
I used 4 generals to start.
Clark is on the premade M1A1. I chose him because he has Amphibious but I think any other Infantry general is alright. You can just swap the given Smith for Clark and it works out.
Vasilevsky is on the infantry which I put the Cossack Calvary on. You best City Defender Infantry general should be here because he is critical for the first few turns.
LeClerc is on the Tank with a KV2. Patton is another option here.
Halsey (as usual with my guides) is on the aircraft carrier for style points. Feel free to choose another general and put him on another unit if you want.
The first turn is kinda important, i positioned Clark and and Vasilevsky to attack the city and clear it. If they somehow don't kill the city, you can use your Air Force Carrier to take it out. If not, feel free to attack Rundstedt. Remember, a Bomber+Fighter does more damage than a Strategic Bomber. Then you can get LeClerc to take the city and preferably destroy the Costal Arty. The Infantry are also positioned where they are so they can attack Rundstedt the next turn.
At Turn 2, I had my units attacking Rundstedt. I managed to kill him but if you have inferior generals or tech, you might need an extra turn. Either ways you should get the first objective. Its kinda important to let your best City Defender take the city as he is going to be attacked a lot. Make sure you also Replenish/Add to his Stacks.
As you can see, you will be attacked, by quite a bunch of enemies! Try and keep your units alive, with priority given to your infantry holding the city due to being very poor this mission. My armored car is helping out Eisenhower but he probably should have been with my main group.
So, in Sevada video, he sends his army to Cherbourg to attack before turn 9 and in Huynh viedo, he attacks the city with the radar during this time. I think you don't have to do either as it makes it harder, instead I think you can just park your army and not have them take any damage and let Rommel come to you. (In this case turn 8). During this period, I put Vatutin on the KV6 and Govorov on the Katyshua. I think these 2 are very important as they make taking Cherbourg vital. I also switched Vasilevsky to the NKVD as Rommel is on a tank.
When Rommel is in sight, get all your units to focus him down. I did it in turn 9 but you can take till 10-11 and its still doable.
Dead Rommel is Dead.
Your next objective is to then move your forces towards Cherbourg. You don't actually have to leave behind any forces like I did since your objective for now is Cherbourg. That was a mistake because I forgot what happens in this mission.
I started attacking Cherbourg on Turn 13 with my starting forces. I messed up, I should have given Engineer or an Anti-Infnatry to Vasilevsky but I (again playing blind) thought they had a tank there. So put an Anti-Infantry on your Infantry General. I also forgot there was a Heavy Arty next to Cherbourg. Don't forget that.
The reinforcements that you receive can be used to capture the inland city which Eisenhower fails to capture. That shouldn't be hard as there should only be a couple of units that survived.
Moment of Silence for Vatutin. Again, kill the Heavy Arty next to Cherbourg and don't let him blast your Heavy Tank. This part is kinda important. Regardless you -SHOULD- be able to take Cherbourg by turn 16. I only attacked with 4 units, you should be able to attack with 7. (See 2nd image with Smith slacking) Your reinforcements should also start capturing any other city that is not captured.
TL;DR Key Points : There are 3 critical points to this mission. The all coincide with the additional objectives. Try and keep as many units alive when you defeat Rundstedt and hold onto the city. Put your best city defender there as the AI will generally focus on the city. Then, try and keep as many units alive when you fight Rommel. Take a free shot with the Katyusha if possible. Lastly, make sure you send your entire main army up to capture Cherbourg, your reinforcements can take the rest of the cities.
If you don't need to Perfect Clear it, you can always do what I did but play slower and safer and keep all units alive. If there's still problems, please feel free to message me and I will try my best to address them.
