Here was my general path

save up for Badoglio first of all, for his firepower and health will carry you through the early Cold War Missions. Crerar has the damage of a 5* general if you know to look for plains. Govorov's output is crazy high, the highest in the game on a Field Artillery. Guderian is unarguably the best tank general in the game in terms of output. Patton is another fantastic general, while Goering is a marshal, has the air damage of Dowding, and has a reasonable punch of infantry along with it. Here are all the universally recommended generals:

Badoglio/Govorov (1st)
Crerar/Auchinleck (2nd)
Guderian (3rd)
Patton/Rommel (4th)
Vatutin (5th)
Mannerheim/Vasilevsky (6th)
Koniev/Bai C.X. (7th)

Basically it's either saving up for Badoglio or straight to Guderian and then working your way to the endgame.
