I put my best generals on the best naval units, took out the easy prey, and advanced. Then I used the second fleet to sweep, and I got 3*, so I say speed is key. |

I put my best generals on the best naval units (Ships of the Line) because at this point in the game, you won't have tanky generals and you won't have the needed coins to upgrade mostly useless at this point naval tech much, I would upgrade tech for ships of the line to level 1. |

Its probably because of your low tech level, or weak generals. This game isn't so kind for beginners, so do some more campaigns and level up gens before trying again. Tip, open a random conquest and compare your units' stats with the stats of similar opposing units (eg. Heavy cavalry, your stat (playing as coalition nation) 60 atk, 10 mobility. France, heavy cavalry, 70atk, 12 mobility) if its like this, level up your tech first, especially land unit tech. Russia should be a stable conquest but 1798 conquest is heavily biased to the Eagle faction.
