Chapter 1 - The Prologue
And...after much of hard work, campaigns, highs and lows and internal strife within the party, within the government, within the country, I was, elected to lead my country. But there isn't anytime left for jubilant celebrations - the Soviets and their communism has gotten all over us. We failed to check Hitler during his rearmament, during his occupation of Rhineland, gobbling Austria, wearing down Czechoslovakia. That eventually cost us a world war (an almost lost cause), thousands of soldier's life...and a communist Europe.
Yes. Europe has turned Red. During our landings at Normandy, the Germans repelled our attack, but fell short in the eastern front, where the Soviet advance was rapid. Zhukov and his red army was moving quickly down the lines. They captured Berlin, when we finally landed at France, this time at with a much larger froce.
Churchill's worst fears was thought to be come true. He feared that the Soviets might turn on us. He already said that we slaughtered the wrong pigs. The Nazi's eastern front disintegrated rapidly. We had also learnt that the members of the German resistance movement, who plotted many plans to kill Hitler, but all of these failed, contacted the Politburo to smash the Nazis, because of being discontent with Chamberlain's policy of appeasement of Hitler and also due to the fortunately quick action of the Communist during their westward drive to Germany.
We, on the other hand, were struck in Normandy, facing the majority of the Nazi forces in France. We finally weared their forces down and storm into Paris. By that time, the Soviets were at Rhine, plotting their attack on France. Then we certainly thought that Stalin was going to betray and attack us. However, lady luck smile on us. News broke of Hitler's suicide and all of a sudden, the Nazis surrendered in France too, in May 8, 1945. The nuclear bomb was dropped on Japan and the too surrendered a week later. The Soviets stopped there itself, missing France by a whisker. We barely managed to weed out the guerilla Nazi forces (some thought that the surrender was a propaganda) and positioned our troops in France when Stalin called a meeting between us - Britain, US and USSR.
And thence, finally on July 6, 1945, the Munich Convention was held. Stalin was already at Munich, waiting for us. He had hurried from Moscow to deliver his "Victory" speech at Berlin. Why did, then he had hurried off to Munich? Our sources says that there were these V-2 (German for Vergelttungswaffe) rockets, which were launched at us, especially in London, which killed many people. It was a wonder for us then, even now, there is no known barrier to stop those rockets, though a system would be developed later.
Our agents though, managed to bring quite a few, including a certain Wehrner von Braun and other scientists to us. They didn't wanted the V-2 rockets to fall in the hands of the Soviets so they contacted us and were safely (and secretly) transported to the recently liberated French areas, escorted to Paris and taken to Washington, along with blueprints and few V-2 rockets. Sadly, most of the rocket scientists ditched to the communists.
When we finally reached Munich, for the conference, (I was the Vice-President of the US then) I was taken aback by the pleasant scene at Munich - the beautiful towns and parks, people being happy on being "liberated", happily doing their work, as if nothing happened. And most surprisingly, there were no blood stains and dead bodies. I could imagine that the captured Nazis got a taste of their own medicine. By contrast, we had a hard time cleaning up in France.
And then, we reached the Feldherrnhalle, the site where Hitler took Gustav Ritter von Kahr, Otto von Lossow and Hans Ritter von Seisser has hostages during the Beer hall Putsch, to gain control of the Bavarian state and eventually, the whole of Germany - his first step in capturing power.
"Привет (Hello)", said Stalin, in a happy and joyful mood apparently because of the recent developments. "Hello" replied Churchill and Harry Truman. We then sat over for lunch and had a pleasant conversation and discussed the conditions to be imposed on Germany.
"Что именно вы подразумеваете под мирными условиями!? (What exactly do you mean by peace conditions!?", thundered Stalin.
Churchill and Truman held their guard firmly, "We must make sure that Germany is not humiliated like the last time while also..."
Stalin interrupted saying, "Я полагаю, господа, что теперь я хмимую Германию и не дам ее вам, от того, чтобы разделить ее или удать вам! (I suppose, gentlemen, that I now control Germany and I won't grant it to you, far from dividing it or conceding it to you!)
We were taken aback. We came with the expectation that Germany would be made independent a neutral country, giving her independence. When we said that it would only humiliate Germany even further, Stalin roared, "Вы говорите, что коммунизм - это позор !? Революция, принесенная отцом Лениным, принесет всем равенство! Вы называете это позором !? (You say that communism is a shame!? The revolution brought by father Lenin brings equality to everyone! You call this as a shame!?)
We were on the backfoot from then. Stalin's monologue, like Hitler lasted lasted about 2 hours, talking about the glory of communism. Even the brave Churchill and wise Truman couldn't say anything. That said, we were on the back foot, since 1944, since the Normandy landings. The meeting broke up at 6:30 PM and we all left, dejected. The boundaries? Soviets gained huge chunks of land. Poland, Czechoslovakia, Balkans and Germany were under the physical boundaries of USSR. Though we didn't gain any new colonies, we did get the French for liberating them, Spain - for Franco learnt that USSR aided the government forces and sent spies to destabilize his government. Japan allied with us too, realizing the threat of a rising USSR, along with Britain and Canada.
