Chapter 4 - Uniting the Country
They say - the strength of the wolf is the pack and the strength of the pack is the wolf. Similarly, the strength of the country is her people and the strength of the people is their country. Before we take on the might of Stalin's EUSSR, we have to check the problems at home, starting with Mexico. We must start mobilizing soon, and we must put a brave face during the times of peril.
Mobilization was ordered immediately. They outnumbered us in the ratio of 2.5 : 1 (3.75 lakh : 1.5 lakh) along the entire border, from California to Texas. However, it was reduced to 1 : 1.5. Mexico might outnumber us in manpower, but we have the dominance in air and the seas. A squadron of 105 jets, including the ones present in the aircraft carrier USS Saipan was dispatched to reinforce the army and make up for manpower too.
Our navy started harassing the small Mexican navy. Orders were given to violate the rules and enter the Mexican waters. USS Missouri (BB-63) shelled a coastal military base at the Texan border, killing 2 and injuring 8. A stern warning was thence, given to the EUSSR, upon who's persuasion, Mexico threatened our border and to the Mexicans themselves too. Their plan was foiled and EUSSR withdrew their aid quickly. The Mexicans, have their senses whacked into their brains again, withdrew their troops, condemned our actions, saying that the USS ships shelled their military base, when their army was doing a regular maneuver.
I was proud of my armed forces who stood valiantly throughout the crisis. Though the immediate crisis was averted, there are still matters to settle - war against the rebel group. Now, we can finally divert all our attention to these rebels, who were getting out of hand. The Mexican achievement gave us some image to our tarnished administration.
Just when the Minister of Homeland Security and Minister of Defense started the meeting, reports came of a rebellion in California, Nevada, Texas and Georgia. The local government there was overthrown. I immediately realized that if this matter leaked out, the rest of the world, especially the prying eyes of EUSSR would try to take advantage of this situation. Hence, electricity to these states was cut off and curfews were maintained. No one was allowed to leave the the state, nor get into it. The rebel products clearly underestimated our capabilities. The military forces were given orders to capture the state and reinstate law and order. Nevada was a cake walk. Georgia too was easy. However California and Texas still held out.
Texas proved to be a real grind. However, the mobilization along the Texan border to thwart the Mexicans helped us here. A force of 20,000 troops were sent to seize the key points in the state. The rebel forces were shoved aside with relative ease and the fiasco in these three states came to an end swiftly, in about 1 day. But there was California yet.
The rebels, after occupying California, prepped up their defense there and held out stubbornly. However, their garrisons and pockets across the state were surrounded and no food or water were allowed to go inside. Though there was some smuggling, it wasn't enough. And as expected, the rebel forces surrendered, 2 days later. They were foolish enough to not to use the army garrison there and did not set up any supply lines. These rebels didn't had any combat experience, which held out in our favor. Still, they did punch above their weight, so much that at one point, bombing the city was seriously considered.
The arrested rebels gave us information that the ones remaining in the other states planned a propaganda campaign. This was very valuable to us. We had prepared well in advance and started purging these rebel groups one by one, and the efficiency of their propaganda was decreased considerably. The last remaining rogues had been captured, thus thwarting the threat of a civil war.
Now, there was one last infiltration left - that of EUSSR and her companies...and fixing our economy. Inflation was increasing and our GDP decreased by 20% since 1945. EUSSR's companies are capturing our markets rapidly and are causing a lot of instability. Big American companies are suffering huge losses. It was time to put a final check, against our enemies.
