I know little to nothing about the antiquity later than the Punic Wars, but it still looks like a great game. What made it flop so badly?

I know little to nothing about the antiquity later than the Punic Wars, but it still looks like a great game. What made it flop so badly? Sustained interest and timing, if I'm not wrong. Plus, you can only farm medals by winning as each belligerent force within each era for the first time. Not a preferred way of farming, especially considering the fact that almost all conquests will end up with an East VS West or North VS South slug fest.

I've finished 2nd Punic Wars, and I must say much of the gameplay is a bit unremarkable. A cross between WC2 and EW6. Conquest are actually kind of fun though. I now control all the way to Carthage with Cyrenaica

The game has a different flavor, I think it’s great for people who get bored about artillery, guns, tanks, planes, nukes... But the game is time consuming, and the thing made it flop badly, I think, is the generals are not very good, especially AI generals, we can “heal” our general in this game by recruit new legions, but the AI won’t. And you can kick the azz of everything with a horde of slingers.
