I have Guderian, Konev, Leeb and Kuznetsov.
I am upgrading my generals (except for Kuznetsov, who I plan to sell) before getting Nimitz and eventually Rommel
Guderian has level 4 Armoured Assault (with medal), level 5 rumour and default Panzer Leader (medal)/Blitzkrieg.
After I upgrade Armoured Assault and Panzer Leader (not Blitzkrieg as I find it unnecessary for such a heavy hitter and will give that to Rommel + the Blitzkrieg medal), I will give him a fifth skill, but I'm unsure whether I should give him Explosives or Plain Fighting. What is your advice?

Explosives, the quicker you get enemy city, the less enemy spam you will fight (or in campaign, the quicker you finish the mission).
Plain Fighting gives you +25 damage, but in plain tile, your unit won't get terrain damage reduce (10% or 20%) like other terrain. Plus, you should give the plain medal to other gen, like Leeb.

Explosives for Guderian.
The decision to give Rommel Blitzkrieg is a difficult one. I have rumor and PL on him, and Rokko with PL and explosives; they are the same general, so it does not matter who gets what. You sacrifice lots of damage to get blitzkrieg, so do keep that in mind.

Thank you both for responding. Yeah, rumour is definitely a given from what I've seen max rumour Guderian do on the battlefield My thinking was that I would have a primary tank general with extreme damage killing everything in a few blows and a highly survivable secondary tank general who avoids retaliation 90% of the time. Would Panzer Leader, making both a damage dealer, be better in your opinion?

I would upgrade rumour on Guderian to make him survive longer cause he does the most damage so he's the general you would want to survive longest. There's no need to keep a general alive if he can't do damage (However I gave my Rommel rumour and blitzkrieg but gave the medal to Guderian and upgraded his rather than Rommel's. Also crossfire could be a skill to consider for Guderian.

My personal recommendation, as someone who enjoys the higher-level play of the game that requires much more time invested, is panzer leader IF you plan on playing the game after you finish the campaign. However, to finish the campaign blitzkrieg, as you note, is probably the superior option. It is worth noting, and it is something I have regretfully so far left out, that PL is only worth it when you medal switch (using the medal and the AA for all generals in the same game); being quite the time consuming, tactic, if you prefer to just play the game, in its absence blitzkrieg is much better.

No. PF does not boost damage enough to compensate for lost explosives or even mechanist.

No. PF does not boost damage enough to compensate for lost explosives or even mechanist. Mechanist? Isn't that a pure waste of skill slots? PF and Explosives is more of a preference issue depending on whether a player wants to focus non-fort units or forts. Not the most amazing skill but still a good one consider I think.

A lot of people more recently have found value in mechanist (I am not one of them), so I included it. But explosives does far more damage than PF because the former stacks with PL.
