Both are great generals and are recommended a lot. I don't know which one is better and I haven't come across Dobeln yet, but I really want to use him because of my attachment to him in conquest playing as Sweden. I'm not sure whether or not to use him over Wittgenstein though.

Wittgenstein recommended a lot? Were you looking at Suvorov's guide? Whichever one you choose, buy him as the last slot filler. Dobeln is significantly better on infantry, whereas Wittgenstein has some cavalry capabilities.

I always ask, for what an infantry general? In the campaign there just rare missions where an extra infantry general is usefull. And in fast conquests? - an infantry general can't work alone, maybe if you have the slots, for 2 or 3 star countries. In a 4 slot game I don't see any space for an infantry specialist. With 7 slots, maybe Victoria. And for sure it is better to invest in items and use the free princess, like littlecorporal said (Don't train Maria!). The game offers the Medals for the necessary items, and free princess. Late in the game, maybe another trainer. If you want generals from the academy, you better pay or grind. Arnold, Kutzaisov, Diez for the start.
